Food Hygiene Certificate

Has a Food Hygiene Cert been of actual use to anybody? I've looked on the internet and it seems to be £15 + VAT, which isn't too much but do employer's actually value this? I went on the Admin (principles of) course via Vision2Learn last year and so far it doesn't seem to have helped me jobwise.

It would only really help if you were going into Hospitality and the people you were up against didnt have it. Cant hurt to do it though, depending on your circumstances (on JSA for example?) you could get it free.0

Hiya,
I have had one for about 10 years now, and occasionally work at festivals in the summer - it is always requested. If you are looking for work within the catering industry - if EHO turn up it will be one of the first thing they ask the employers for. It is always good for employers to have one - and for you to keep up to date. Alternatively, some employers will pay for you to have this. I don't know in terms of 'training for employment' on your CV, but always a plus for the employer to know that you have done it.
I hope that helps.0 -
Thanks, I think I will do the course - my only issue now is to decide whether to fork out £25 and get a nice shiny certificate through the post (ok, probably not shiny) or pay £15 and apparently you print it out yourself.0

Have you looked into getting it for free? (funded, not a giveaway)0

I have tried to ask my adviser at the Jobcentre, but he was very evasive - I'm not really sure where I should start looking.0

Contact your local FE College, they may be able to fund it. The rules on funding changed in the last couple of weeks and Food Safety can now be funded for people on JSA. Your advisor should really know this but they also have (what used to be called) advisor discretionary fund which can help pay for courses. There is also ESF SSU (Skills Support for Unemployment) which can fund courses like this which is usually run by FE Colleges and referred onto by the JCP advisors.0

My other half is looking to do an online food safety & hygiene certificate (probably Level 2 for Catering), and there's quite a variety with different accreditation. Can someone please give me a steer on what's best?
I've seen accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), City & Guilds, Qualifi, Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) and Education Development International (EDI).
City & Guilds is probably the only one I've heard of, so maybe something like this one:

Any recommendations?0 -
If you get a job in either Hotel catering or any large hospitality job your new employer should have to give free training to obtain a suitable Food Hygiene Cert .There are more questions than answers :shhh: :silenced:WARNING ! Many job ads require you to have a certificate already, which is why my wife is interested. I just can't find any specific guidance on the subject of accreditation.0 -
Yes, I'm on my third one having worked in catering/hospitality for 14 years.
Don't buy the online one, they're worthless. Go to a college for a day's training, and get a certificate recognised by Environmental Health.0
