Really confused - uswitch quotes have jumped £150 in one day

Options
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone knows if every utility company has suddenly increased their prices today?

Two days ago, I got a quote from Co-Op, which I came to purchase yesterday, and their prices jumped by £90. They didn't tell me two days ago that they were increasing their prices. (ha why would they?)

So yesterday I went on uswitch again and was getting quotes for around £650 from ScottishPower and the others.

Just done it again today, same criteria etc, and now it's gone up to £800!

Can someone please explain what's going on?

Sorry if I've come across naïve or thick here... we've literally just moved out from our parents' and it's our first place.

Thanks so much!

Are you inputting your anticipated annual consumption in kWh?
It's the only way to get accurate results.
I don't know of any other supplier other than the co-op that has increased prices over recent days.
  • Hi there, thanks for the response. As it's my first ever time, I've no idea my consumption, so I used the drop down boxes to estimate.

Anyway, rang uSwitch and the quotes come out at the correct price! Yet on the website they're coming out at £150 more still... very strange.

I went with ScottishPower in the end. Cheapest, though their elec unit prices aren't the cheapest. But there's no standing charge. Swings and roundabouts I suppose.

SC and NSC tariffs are a red herring. The total cost either way is only pence different over the year, unless you are a low user.

If there isn't a daily standing charge, there is in effect a standing charge as they use a two tier system i.e. you pay extra for the first xxxkWh per year - and unless you have very low consumption it comes to the same thing.
  • Hi there, yes it looks like I'll get b*ggered either way... though just looked at my mom and dad's bills and they are with nPower, no standing charge and units are around 12p per KWh. Yet my quote with nPower was ridiculously high. I've got a cooling off period so if I do find anything cheaper soon then I can cancel.

    Thanks everyone.
