Quote for Electrics - what to expect?

We are having our kitchen and dining room knocked into 1 with a new fitted kitchen. The builder sent his electrician round to quote for sockets, led spotlights, under cupboard lighting. He said we should expect to pay about £2000 and that he would send his quote to the builder who would forward it to us. He would not send to us direct. The quote arrived today with a list of things to be done and provided ( although a few things have been missed off). with a price of £2420 plus vat. this seems a lot to us. but what i amconcerned about is shouldnt the quote be more detailed and broken down with prices for each thing? rather than a list with a lump sum at the bottom. we've never done this before and are worried about being ripped off. any advice greatly received.

kind regards
G

    Omg he's having a laugh

What exactly needs doing? Does he need to rod the wall or channel it? Move sockets. How many spots? Under cupboard lighting is quite easy unless you want the wires coming out the wall. They can be hidden by the pelmet.

Unfortunately this is what happens with kitchen fitters. They pressure you into using their recommended tradesmen and play the, if I can't get this done and wired up by next Tuesday I can't finish the job. So you are affectively stuck with a hugely inflated price that he takes a cut from.

It depends if its holding him up. It's hard to call without knowing the job. Spots can be done after but sockets he might need those doing before tiling or fixing units.
  • Jeez that sounds like a lot. I was quoted £55 per double ( in London) and a job lot for lighting.

A friend of mine is getting 2200 square ft 5 bedroom house , with consumer unit completely rewired for £9000.

So yours sounds very expensive. Again your kitchen might be 10,000 square ft in which case it might not be.

But off the top of my head it sounds steep.

Get an electrician yourself and ask for a quote, builders always recommend someone they know and get a "drink" for doing so- so that is often factored into your costs.
  • I think you're being vastly overcharged.

I recently fitted our new kitchen and the electrics came to £750 for a new kitchen ring final circuit and RCBO consumer unit. That was with me buying the sockets and lights which added another £100 to the total.

    Hope this helps.
  • 7 twin socket outlets
4 switched fused spurs with remote outlets for appliances(fridge/freezer, washing machine, cooker hood and dishwasher)
    2 30amp cooker circuits
9 KSRFRD200 dimmable LED downlights with switch in the kitchen area
2 KSFRD200 dimmable LED downlights with switch over peninsula
8 KSFRD200 dimmable Led downlights switched in 2 banks with dimmer switches in dining area.
Provision for plinth lighting with switch
    1 tv point
Not Included in Quote - the cost of supplying the plinth lighting
All accessories will be MK Logic plus white plastic and will be flush mounted
All circuits will be wired back to the existing consumer unit
All work will conform to the latest edition BS7671 (The IEE Wiring Regulations) and will be tested and certified accordingly. Also, due to the nature of the work, building control will be informed, and they will issue the client with a certificate of conformance. £2420.00

Missing from this list is the under cupboard lighting and he said the whole kitchen/dining room would need rewiring which isn't mentioned.

Does it still look too expensive? We have got expensive LEDS and sockets so I'm guessing the parts would come to quite a lot.

    Thank you

I think that job should come in at under £1,260 especially as it doesnt include parts.

Get your own electrician don't be put under any added pressure personally i would get another builder as the price has been over-inflated. Also use the website ratedpeople.com and get up to 4 quotes then you can compare quotes/feedback. Don't rush and make sure a written contract is used and it shows all the costs and any added complications, also are they charging per hour or the overall cost and ask how long the job will take. Do the research first. Also ask the builder for a contract of what he is going to do.

OP, why have you posted this twice?

  • Hi Phill99. I'm sorry I posted it here before I realised there was a forum section specifically for quotes - oops!

    Kind regards

Well the dimmable LED's alone are probably over £600. And two 6mm cooker circuits 6mm cables is over £2.50 per meter....

I'd also check that they are registered and not paying Building Control a fee (anything from £150-£300) to come and check the works.

If I were you, I'd use that list as the basis for getting at least 1 other quote and then they can be compared like for like
