Short Term Car - Urgent.

Options
I crashed my car the other day and am I am not covered for a courtesy car (thought I was, apparently not!), but need some form of transport fairly urgently to get to work/shops etc.. as they are not easy to access by public transport. I also need one to look for a new car! But waiting on the insurance to come through.

Are there any cheap short term solutions that I can do to get hold of a car fairly urgently, if I am buying a new car I don't want to rush into just getting anything.

Short term car hire seems to be very expensive, my other option I was thinking is buying a £500 banger on a temporary basis to get me about then selling it again or trading it in for a better car when I find one.

Thanks

Taxi's if your only doing short journeys for a short time.

Can't you car share to work short term ?
  • Theres a local car hire firm to me that will hire you a corsa for £21 a day or £99 a week.....if thats expensive then Halfords will sell you a push bike for £100.

Cheap runabout and resell. But check with the insurance before buying. Will they cover it and how much??

Or is it a policy where it pays out on a total loss and thats it?

I take it the accident was your fault?

No, I swerved to avoid another car that crashed (would have been much worse if I hadn't), so I crashed too, but they said as no one had actually crashed into me it would probably come off mine, but they will look into it (didn't sound promising). Does that change things?

Well yes, if you managed to get the other driver's details and have witnesses. You could possibly hire a car and claim the costs back from the TP's insurance.

Sadly the answer to post #5 is yes it was your fault.

As the other driver made no contact with you and pushed nothing else into your i see this as your fault 100%.

They could say they wouldnt have hit your car even if you hadnt moved.

One of those things in life. Worth trying though. But it does seem likes its your fault and going to empty your pockets.

Tough call, So i sit here and have a bad accident or do i move and risk causing damage to my car thats my fault.

If they dont admit blame etc then buy a banger.

  • If you can't hack (or there are none) buses etc then get a cheap car with long mot. Worse case you scrap it, but still £100's less than a hire car.

Plenty of good cars out there for £500. Just look within a 10 mile radius on auto trader. Should easily get something with a years MOT.
  • I've picked up a Ford Escort from my local gumtree which had a few months tax/mot left and I think I paid a whopping £125 (basically scrap value + tax rebate cost). I used it for about a week but then got sick of the smell of what I assume was bombay spice mix stuff poked in the airvents :D ... I then flogged it (back on gumtree) for £150. £25 profitz!

You can get a short term temporary hack for FAR less than £500.
