Did they load the premium when you declared the conviction or did they offer the same premium but with a bigger excess?0

My insurance policy was due for renewal at around the same time that I became aware that I needed to declare the conviction. My then insurer wouldn't insure me so I started to look around for someone who would. Couldn't find any of the 'usual' companies who'd take me on so found HomeProtect (underwritten by AXA) through google search. From the outset, their premium was double what I had previously been paying (prior to declaration) AND the excesses were much higher. As I needed insurance, I had no choice but to accept their conditions.Did they load the premium when you declared the conviction or did they offer the same premium but with a bigger excess?0 -
Yeah that sounds like a specialist insurer that imposed an additional excess due to the conviction. The fact that it is double what you were paying elsewhere previously is irrelevant because most mainstream insurers would not have covered you at all once they knew about the conviction, you have merely paid the premium that the specialist insurer charged for their cover. Now that the person is not living there you can move back into mainstream channels and (hopefully) pay lower premiums.I work for a leading insurance company as an Insurance Advisor dealing with Commercial Insurance. Feel free to ask me any questions but please do not take what I say as correct advice at all times, as every insurance company works differently to others.0
