What is the best way of obtaining the email address of the decision maker?

Hi folks
I've been unemployed for a while and now thinking of emailing speculative letters with my cv attached, to all the local employers?
Could someone be kind enough to advice what is the best way to obtain the email address of the person who makes the hiring/firing decisions?
Is it a good idea to phone up the company to get that info?
This sounds like a long winded process. Has anybody else used this approach?
Thanks in advance for your responses.

I'm not sure it would work too well if you were targetting all employers in a local area. Perhaps better if you were after say accountancy work, or legal work (ie a fairly specific job).
Do you know anybody that works for any of these local companies who could let you know who to speak to?
It might be worth having a scout around any companies website to see if there are any contacts named on there.
You could phone the receptionist and ask if there is a HR department?
If it's shop work you could always pop in with your cv. Sometimes it's actually meeting the employer that makes a difference.
I don't know what methods would work best but just putting some ideas out there for you.

Hi AP
Thanks for your reply.
I only said local employers as a starting point. Of course, I would widen my search eventually.
Do you think it is a good idea about this emailing, or would I sound desperate for a job.
The last thing I want is local employers attending a network meeting and having a laugh at my efforts of getting a job!!0 -
Twice I have found and got a job through sending in my CV ad hoc. I looked through the websites of some companies for an email address others I phoned. Good luck. It shows initiative!
No you wouldn't sound desperate, I think it makes you look keen and willing to work.0 -
I do it all the time and on 'file' at 4 companies in the industry I have 20 years exp in and I keep in touch with them lus networking on boards in the same industry on LinkedinHi AP

Say you wanted to work in a law firm in the accounts team, I'd google law firms in say the city of London then look at each site to see if there were any jobs advertised or a way to send a CV on spec. After than I then search for the HR team memebers on the net and Linkedin and you will be able to get email address of at least one person in HR.
OR go on Google maps and search an area 1 mile sq at a time. Zoom in and you can see some companies pop up on there and you can get re directed to their sites that way. Easier to find companies you have never heard of or thought of that way.
No one would laugh at any efforts made - you need to make an effort to get somewhere in anything you do.We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

so like this when I zoom in on a Google Map of London looking for any kind of company with a website etc
Just stick your mouse over any company you see on the map and click the website link
