External Cdrw v External Hard Drive

My hard drive failed two weeks ago,thankfully the repair person managed to save 'My Documents' He was suppose to install a Cd-Rw unfortunatly couldn't find the correct size for my laptop.
Now that I have had that scare with the hard drive I want everything on my computer backed up, should I go for an external cdrw or an external hard drive?

For long-term backup I'd go for the CD (DVD) option. Anyway, what's the problem with finding a compatible internal device for your laptop? What are its make and model?0
