What do you do when your iDevice runs out of space?

I know some will say that I don't need that much music on an iPod, but it's still only 8000 tracks.

I have relatively few apps, and have deleted those I don't use much. Do you de-clutter your music and apps?

You don't need that much music on an Ipod. ;)

What about re-encoding the tracks to a lower (or variable) bit rate to reduce the file sizes?

Re-encoding would be a long process - I've already done most of my audio files once from FLAC, and they're all in the region of 200kbps or so - some 320mp3.

I probably could get them down to around 175 or so and they would still sound transparent to me, but that would take forever.

I bet your music is in playlists anyway, so therefore you could probably delete around 50% of the tracks.

Don't know anyone who loves every track from every album that they own.

  • I have the same problem. Is your device 16gb? you might find you don't have enough space despite the seeming abundance of space.
Personally when it comes to Ipad's, iphones etc I would have, if able too gone for a 32gb model for a benchmark size.

  • Apps are tempting too. Much to love.
I find it very difficult to know how much to allocate in my devices. Android is no exception.

  • Hi - one way I found to avoid having to micromanage or weed through collection was using itunes smart playlists.

You can for example create a music playlist and make it a random selection of tracks limited by X gigbytes or Y hours. And you can then just reapply the list for it to mix up again - or better yet tell it to select things you havent heard for awhile.

This is the 64Gb 5th gen. model.

I do use smart playlists and genius mixes, but I like to listen to entire albums also, so don't want to delete much. It's looking a little better today after I tidied up some duplicate songs in iTunes:

Use Google Music & the GoMusic app..

This allows your music library to be uploaded to the cloud, then streamed over Wifi to your device - that way have a smaller playlist physically on the device with the rest of the library available on wifi..

The GoMusic app (Couple of £ on the app store) also allows music to be downloaded to the ipod for offline play so works a treat for me...
  • One other thing that no one has mentioned yet is that you could subscribe to iTunes match. That way Apple automatically manages the music collection in your iPod. So for example, if it's running out of space, the phone will delete the songs that you played the least. But you can stream songs and download those later on.
