Couldn't give you answer without your childs medical history...but then that's what your Doc. is for....ask your GP!
For over the counter medications it is seen as common practise now to ask a pharmacist or shop staff rather than waste GP time. If I made an appointment to ask my GP that I think he would be extremely cross.
zziggi you are lucky, only one I can have prescribed is Codiene for DS2, can't buy it for a child over the counter. One day I might be more organised...........

Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
GP can give you prescriptions for this (prescriptions are free for under 16s)
Health visitors are also allowed to prescribe this (not many people know this) and of course prescriptions are free for under 16s.
I have it on repeat prescription for both my kids. Once the bottle is getting low I just repeat order another bottle before they start the next round of headaches, earache, temperature, cough cold and flu....
I also get mine from the HV-on recommendation from someone on this site. They are not always forthcoming with this, so you might have to ask:D

If your children are used to the taste of Calpol they might not like the paracetamol that you can get on prescription, it taste quite different.0

I have always got my children to take tablets once they are of a suitable agge. The caplet ones go down easy especially as only half is needed. You do need to do the maths and work out the active ingredient per spoon/tablet but makes it much cheaper in the long run and easier for travelling - I am talking about 6years plus not little onesThe birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0

shop-brand paracetamol can taste bad, always try it yourself first
my pharmacy's own ibuprofen for kids is absolutely vile.
i don't know of any alternative to medised.
the sedative is an antihistamine - if your child is over 2 (i think) you can buy antihistamine over the counter.
i have both calpol and medised at home, my babe is under 2. i only use the medised if he has a cold or hayfever in addition to the pain, because ordinary calpol works fine if it's just teething pain etc. and i always feel guilty about using sedation.
you could ask your pharmacist to check the minimum age for giving shop-bought antihistamines.'bad mothers club' member 13

You should try your local pharmacy and see if they run the minor ailment scheme? Quite a few of ours do - it basically means for a list of ailments (including headaches/colds/sore throat etc) the pharmacist has a book of medicines they can prescribe to you withought seeing your gp - therefore as they are in effect prescribing if it is for a child or you yourself do not pay for prescriptions you get it FREE!!!!
Always do this now go in to my local boots (have 2 x dd 5 and 18m) say one of them has cold/headache and they get you to fill in a quick form (which they forward to GP as have seen it in his file) and then thank you, you can walk away with meds eg calpol - you do have to state that you want to use the MINOR AILMENTS SCHEME - fab idea0
