I had not realised that so much of your debt was courtesy of your OH. Is there any way to pursue him for any of this (particularly the money taken out for the extension), or was it a case of you got to not buy him out of the house, but he pays you no money?
One other thing, I am assuming that you have the single persons discount for council tax.
Also are you in the right band for council tax? There is an article on this site, with a link to how to check this out. If you are in a higher band than you should be you can claim back a rebate for all the years you lived in the house.

Ras, I don't put enough by for my tax bill no. I put by 3150 a month, but it never covers it all, then I have to explain to the taxman why I don't have it, and end up paying extra when its due from somewhere.
All my visa are at their max within a few pounds. No chance of moving anything, and got refsed a virgin card 3 months ago because of the amount of my outstanding debt.
Yes, my ex did do the dirty, he left me with everything and disappeared for 18 months. Now he is back but living with another woman and her 3 children. He 'claims' he has no money. most of it is in my name, other than an overdraft which he pays now. He says he has no money to help me, and gets nasty if I try to sort it out, so looks like I'm stuck with it.
I guess I could take in a lodger. I'm nto sure I like the idea of someone else living in my house, but if I could find someone I knew a bit, I would definately consider it. I'll ask around.
I am going to increase my fee's on the 1st of July, so this will help a little,. It should increase my wages by approx. £80 a month.
The house was mine when he paid for the etension. We just paid everything together. Hence most stuff is in my name, as his credit was not that good. It all worked fine until he left.
I do get single persons discount on my Council Tax, and I think I am in the correct 'b' band, but I'd be interested in knowing where to go to check!
I have a huge whisky bottle that I have half filled over the last 2 years with coins. I'm going to count it tonight. Anyone care to guess how much there is?!Half the Interest with Boo : Barclaycard £4765.64 May 20070 -
Hi SG
Thanks for the explanation. Sorry to get personal, but did yot take legal advice on the split. One the one side, if you were married, he might be liable for some of the debt. One the other side, is there any risk that he could come back and claim equity from the house?
I note from other posts that you are tackling one small problem after another, so congrats on making moves.
Could you check your credit rating, then post on the credit card board to see whether anyone there knows of a card that would take you even on a similar rate for balance transfers? You may have to wait a coupls of months but might get rid of those cash balances?
Another thing, when do you next have to cough up to the tax man? Presumably you get hit by penalty charges as well as interest and at the moment have not where from which you can pull any extra to pay him? maybe need to do some sums to see whether this costs more than the CCs.
Any luck with reclaiming on the PPI? Have you checked the small print to see whether you could claim even though you are self employed? Longer term, since this loan is secured, have you considered that it might be a good idea to have a small Critical Illness policy to cover the outstanding amount?
If you can get the PPI payments back and the loan reduced, that might get you the space you need to start clearing the other debts.
Otherwise, I would throw your spare at the Barclay Card as this will help reduce your outgoings most.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
The sooner I got out of my marriage the better. He also agreed to walk away without taking half of my house, (As it was mine to start with) so I wanted thigns to move quickly, in hindsight, I should have got things on paper. He promised to help with the debts, but almost immediately stopped paying anything. So here I am.
I think I should probably check my credit rating, I'm not sure where or how, so any advice there would be good.I'll then post and see what the CC board has to say.
I'm paying arrears to the taxman now. My Jan2007 bill at £150 a month, and end of july, this wont be paid in full, and I'll have another to contend with. I'm not sure of the interest on it but it does not seem that much. Only a few pence each month. I'll check.
I've heard nothing about the PPI yet. They said it could take some time, and I did only send the letter to my secured loan company on friday.I'll give them a call at the end of the week, and chase them up for a reply. The FO have written aswell.
I am paying the most of my barclaycard at the moment, as it has more cash advances on it. As son as this is clear, I will close it and work on the others.
I just wish I could put my credit cards together on different card completely and keep it all on one interest rate
Maybe I'll post on the CC board and see what they suggest. Half the Interest with Boo : Barclaycard £4765.64 May 20070 -

sadgirl you can check your credit report in one of two ways (or both if your prefer) one is online through creditcheckuk (experian) in which you can view your credit report (and print it) for free for 30days but please make sure you cancel as other wise they will charge and the second way is though the mail and these cost £2 per each credit agency (there are 3 and diffrerent creditors will use different agency) look at this link for more details http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1101485056,23650,
also if you have a quidco account you can do the online one through them and get £5 back. But please be aware if you use quidco just for this the £5 will be taken as admin charge (this happens anyway each year with quidco) but if you use the site anyways or after doing this (ie for shopping/changing insurances) you could make yourself a little bit of free cash

Hello
Are there any loans - or other borrowings that you could write to the company and ask them to freeze the interest - or write off the debt? You can write with your financial status and explain the maximum that you can pay per month. Most companies will go for this these days (Not GE Money - Unless you have a solicitor behind you!) - Sometimes you have to write a couple of times, as if you are appealing to their better nature (or grovelling!) - This is better than going bankrupt - That is very bad for these finance and loan companies as well, so you can mention that that is your only option.
Hope life gets better. - £2500 is a good income and you should be able to pull things together in a couple of years - if you pulled in your purse strings - but you would need strong support. - I can see that you cannot talk to your partner about this, but you must get help from Citizens Advice Bureau or the local money lending (council run organisation) - They advise on cheaper options of loans and the real law, and they will help you write letters in solicitors 'talk!' (Get nearest organisation number from the internet or phone book).
Hope it's helped
