    If you go here

you can get a Glass's guide valuation of the part exchange valuation of your car to give you an idea of where you might stand with this idea.

Unfortunately, I suspect you will be in for a very unpleasant surprise as to what the Renault is worth as part exchange.

Just had a look - I think you are going to be very disapointed. I know that Renaults depreciate quickly, but that is unbelievable. Glass's have yous with a trade in value of £6280 in excelent condition, so your dreams of a free swap are just that I am afraid.

I had looked but I couldn't bear to break the news. I suppose there might be a bit of an uplift for the extras but not even close to the price of the Picasso.

  • We'll give it you straight (we're always honest, so brace yourself). The Modus failed to get close to sales targets by Renault last year, it was among the most expensive (size for size) among small hatches, even Renault's own new Clio was bigger and cheaper, making Modus hard to sell for dealers. As a result they have a very difficult resale market. The Oasis was really a special edition and although S/E's usually come well spec'ed, the used car forecasters like Glasses and CAP find it hard to evalute them and set decent residuals as they are always based on the lower spec' model with some extras thrown in, so you often suffer on residual forecasts.

It sounds like you paid full list price (unheard of for any Renault as they all have massive discounts all year round) so your depreciation value looks particularly bad, that car should easily have been purchased at around £10 to £10.5k 6 mths ago inc the extras (our own current price on 1.4 Oasis with metallic and sunroof at the moment is c £10.5k from normal Renault dealers with you as first and only owner).

Always use a broker's advice before buying a car, many, like us, are independent so aren't biased by ownership or brand allegiance, so will give you straight advice.

Yours has a horrid private sale value of around £6.5k (£7k'ish maybe if you find the right person..but values are easily sought out on the internet these days). This would be bad enough if you'd bought at 10.5k, but even worse if you bought at full list 12.5k. A dealer might forecourt it at around £7 - 7.7K but it is a hard model to shift even tho' it has a nice engine and pretty trouble-free (people can buy brand new Fiesta's for less than that at the moment so won't be enamoured with a 1.4 Modus 7-8 mths old for the same price).

Bear in mind last October you could pick up brand new Ford Focus 1.6 5drs for under £11k in very decent spec's with nice frills.

The Picasso VTX 1.6 can be ordered (through us at any rate) for £10,573 assuming solid paint choice and you'll find some cheaper than that through other brokers if you don't mind a pre reg etc. Citroen have a px deal against new Picasso this month but it excludes the VTX model. You could get the 1.6 petrol Desire in solid paint at £10,120 and take advantage of the PX offer but it won't be anwhere close to what you want on the Modus - even a generous Citroen dealer will need you to find £3k against the Picasso price.

Really sorry but there's no point in flowering it up, never buy a new car without taking independent advice...I will check with our own dealers on Tuesday if there's any way they can help (maybe with a year old Picasso) and will come back to you privately if I get a result for you...I promise!

Are you planning to keep the picasso a long time? If not I suspect you'll find steep depreciation hitting you on the Picasso due in part to citroen's suffering steep depreciation, look at the price for 2-3 years old picassos at the moment and bear in mind they are a current models now (whereas when you sell they won't be). Do you need a (brand) new car?

Polarberit is right,we paid about 10k for a (then) 2 year old 2.0hdi Picasso -which I can highly recommend- Citroens DO depreciate quickly if you go to http://www.citroenpicasso.org.uk/picasso/ and ask the other picasso owners on their views of the vtx and others, good luck
I would love some decent telly on a Saturday night
