A couple of weeks ago my 2004 Ford Ka had to have some repair work done - new coils, ht leads and plugs - just suddenly no power and would not accelerate, engine maintenance light came on so I limped back to local garage.

Anyway they fitted these items and said all OK now, but it wasn't it was still spluttering and missing so took it straight back and turns out that one of the new ht leads is broken (obviously cheapo ones). They subsequently replaced with new ones - well I hope they did.

However, since then although it is not running too badly, it is not as smooth as it was prior to the problem arising and is still a bit stuttery on occasion and even worse I am only getting about 35mpg instead of the usual 40mpg:eek:

Could changing these things cause the mpg to drop? My OH says no, but I can't think why this should have happened since the work was done.

Is he right and am I imagining everything?

sounds like its still not running right?

I'd take it back and get it sorted properly.

What I found a bit unnerving was that the mechanic who fitted the leads said they are crap:mad: When he suggested to the owner that perhaps it would be better to order some better ones, he refused saying that they wouldn't get a refund on them if they did that.

I don't really want to go back there again, as have no confidence in them now.

Would it be expensive to have this checked out somewhere else, just to see if it is not running properly?

  • You could buy some proper leads from Ford and fit them, if it sorts out the problem take the cheap ones back to the garage and see if you can get some money back, you probably wont tho as the cheap leads work as they should just not as good as the original ones.

I take it they changed the spark plugs too, you might want to check that used the right ones.

I wouldn't know how to fit them (female you see):o But you would think that if they fitted replacement ones they would work.

    Are they difficult to fit?

Going back to garage tomorrow to have a new set of leads fitted.

Have noticed that it only stutters when engine has warmed up and under load - usually at low revs in third or fourth. No problems starting and appears to run perfectly when cold.

I just hope that the new leads will:

    a) put the mpg back to what it was

    and

    b) stop the misfiring

I don't know what to do next if it doesn't:(

  • i may be wrong but to me ths is sounding like the lamda sensor on top of exhaust. my mum had a fiesta 1.3 petrol wich i think is same engine that is in the old ka's?? and she had a problem were when it was warm there would be no power and little spluttering when it got up to temperature also her mpg dropped. she found that when it was warm it was very difficult to gain speed above say 35 or 40. u less she went to lower gear.

on her engine when you opend the bonnet teh lambda sensor was in middle of the front section sticking out of a manifold had a 2 wire plug going to it. cant think how else to check if its same engine.
