Is anybody making money from affilliate links these days?
I've a handful of ideas for websites / forums that i would set up with a view to generating revenue via affiliate links.
I know its all traffic dependent, but is it viable to affiliate link to recommended products in terms of making even a part time income out of it?

In short, yes, but of course its far more complex than a simple yes/no answer.
To make affiliate sites work, you need to create a site with excellent content that people will actively visit and then have your affiliate links built in and around your content. You need to attract the visitors first before you can sell to them!
The best types of affiliate schemes, in my experience, are things like product (Amazon) and insurance (travel insurance particularly) advertising as these tend to have decently high conversion rates.0 -
As Tomby says, the short answer is yes - but you have to put some work into it.
The days of just bunging up a banner and making a reasonable income are gone.
I track my sales against link type and 99% of them come from contextual links rather than a standard banner.
You need content to get anywhere in the SE rankings and then keep a visitor interested.
My affiliate sites all now have content that provides value to the visitor, rather than just being the landing pages on the visitor's way to the merchant's site.
Another way to approach it is to build a decent opt-in mailing list (don't be tempted to buy one - they'll likely not be opted-in and you will end up accused of spamming) and produce a regular newsletter.0 -
