my payment has gone to the wrong person. What shall I do?

I bought a wing mirror from a seller and it seems the paypal payment has gone to someone else. The seller sent me an email saying that e bay have messed it up but that her paypal account might not be set up yet. Now surely she shouldn't accept paypal if her account is not set up. IMO she should send the the wing mirror (which OH needs now for MOT) then sort out paypal and e bay herself. I have only bought 2 things off ebay and sold one so I don't really know the procedure, how, or who of if to complain. Can anyone advise please.

I wonder if the seller has got a new paypal email address, if so when she has listed she may have not manually changed on the listing her old paypal address....
If not, you may have to put in a claim with paypal
  • I am not getting anywhere with this.. I need more help please. My OH reckons it is a scam. The seller only just joined E Bay. The problem is that my money has gone into limbo unclaimed into someone elses pay pal account. I still don't know if this has just been set up to get my money with no intention of sending the goods. I phoned pay pal and they say that the seller must get the funds off the third party, but if she really doesn't know him, how can she? and if she does why would she. I cant see why I just can't transfer the payment back to my paypal and send her a cheque, but pay pal won't allow it. Though now I would rather just get the money back and cancel the whole transaction. I don't know who to complain to to get a resolution. Is she counting on the fact that it is only £17.50 for me not to take her to small claims court? Is this the only option. I am fed up with OH moaning about it, and not being able(it seems) to do anything about it.

If you paid through the link on the ebay invoice then you have paid it into the paypal account specified by the seller. If they have made a mistake and put the wrong paypal email address in the ebay account then its their fault. I would message the seller tell them as far as you are concerned you have paid for the item and as soon as you can open a paypal dispute for not receiving item - I think you have to wait 7 days from auction end. You should receive your money back then from the paypal dispute.

Thanks FloFlo. But do you have to pay when you raise a dispute through paypal? As I have sent her a text, no reply, I said to the OH I will give it a few days, just in case it is a genuine mistake. So I will follow your advise thanks. Do you think I also ought to phone her to see whats going on?

Ooops, pressed thanks instead of Quote!!

Anyway you can open a dispute striaghtaway, there is no charge to open a dispute with paypal.

If you go to paypal website and then resolution centre (link on top) and enter the transaction number for the payment, you can open a dispute and then escalate to a paypal claim.
This is normally dealt within 7 days and if there is no reponse from seller and they can't prove dispatch should go in your favour and you will receive the refund.
  • As a newbie ebay seller I inadvertently put the wrong email address on a few of my listings, just missed a 't' out of internet, but that left an amail address that couldn't exist.

I explained to the people who paid via PayPal and they cancelled their payments.

Some then paid to the correct email address , others sent cheques.

I did a lot of apologising for the error and sent some items before payment!!!!
beacause the error was totally mine.

To date no buyer has been nasty about it, so there are a lot of nice ebayers.

the seller is saying that she does not know the person who owns the e mail address that is listed to her paypal account. Pay pal say I can't do anything about it except ask the seller to get in touch with the owner of the e mail address. I will leave it a bit longer though.
