Laptop Keyboard not working correctly. Can anyone help please?

Just bought and set up Dell Inspiron 15 3520 Laptop for my elderly Father In Law.
First computer he has ever owned and we are now going through it with him to show him how to get on the internet and send emails.
We've hit a problem. When we try to type an email address we can't get the @ to come up (useful if you want to send emails!!!). Every time we go to the @ we get a /.
Getting the same type of problem on some of the other keys as well.
Initially though typical, just got it up and working and now find we have to take it back and start again. However, someone mentioned that it could be that the keyboard set up is wrong and needs changing. Unfortunately they couldn't tell us how.
Not being very clever with these sort of things can anyone tell me if that is possibly all that needs doing and if so how?
Very grateful for any help that can be offered.
Thanks

It's probably regional settings for keyboard layout
Windows? Which version?0 -
It's Windows 80

the regional settings are probably set to american instead of british, add uk keyboard, and delete us

Have a look at this:

No problem, pretty certain that's what it is, since physically your keys work
Until then - if it's US layout, you'll get @ by pressing Shift+2, if not, I'm not sure which layout it's set to but everything will be ok once set to UK.0 -
The other possibility is that you've turned the numeric key-pad on. Do some of the letters come up as numbers instead? If so this is likely the cause.
There will be a "fn" button probably in the bottom left of the keyboard along with the "alt" and "ctrl" buttons, this plus another key (possibly F10-12 or similar) will turn the numeric key-pad emulation on/off.
