The bank did tell my partner he wouldn't be at risk of bad credit because they are aware of the situation, but I'm not really sure how much truth can be made of that? They have the letters, complaints etc on file so if his credit rating has been affected can he 'appeal' this?

Has he checked his credit files at the 3 credit reference agencies? is the account reported? and are there markers on the account history to indicate going over the limit / having things bounced (e.g. '1' or '2' markers etc). If the account shows on his report then I doubt they will agree to remove it.

They may have a record on their file of the situation - but you also said
they have told us our only option is for my partner to close the account
ultimately he is responsible as well if an account in his name (or joint names) is not run in accordance with the terms.

  • Well the update is he has been strong after texting her asking her nicely but now has text her saying he knows everything and they need to sort it NOW. Guess whose not picking up their phone now?

In that case, he should have himself removed from her account.

The bank is saying he can't unless she goes into the branch with him as her signature isn't on the account..
  • Does anyone know any good possibly free websites to check your credit rating? Pretty new to all this as luckily we're pretty savvy and never have ANY money problems (which make it kind of worse!)

    noddle - https://www.noddle.co.uk

    Completely free.

Then he should close it, as soon as it next goes into credit.

To know for certain whether the account appears, or whether he is showing as being financially associated he will really need to get copies of all 3 credit reference files. That is experian, equifax and noddle(callcredit).

Noddle is free online, and so sensible to start with that one first. The other 2 you can either buy a one-off statutory report online or by post (£2) or can sign up to free trials (but remember to cancel before the trial finishes).

  • She's blown off the handle, saying because my best friend died and she had to have the little one for an extra day (so we could go to the funeral..) she had to get a loan (to go into Dorothy Perkins..) that she's refusing to sort it out. Wish me luck!
  • If his is the only name on the account, then he must be the account holder.

That being the case, he needs to do one of the following immediately.

    1. Close the account.

    2. Have her removed from the account.

It does not sound like it is worth him communicating with her any further on this. He should just go ahead, go to the branch and close the account.

Even if he chooses not to close the account until it is in credit he could contact the bank to stop the card that she uses.
