Why is that a good thing? A grotesque distortion and a desire to reinforce entrenched privilege. How does that help the genuinely poor and the genuinely disadvantaged? Let the wealthy keep their mansions and damn everyone else to slums and exortionate prices. Short-sighted and unfair idiotic clap-trap from Oxfam.

That's ridiculous. If HA's and Council's can't sanction tenants for non payment of (a portion of) rent then no one will pay it!

Perhaps Oxfam should stick to dealing with issues of genuine poverty and not get itself involved in the UK's generous benefit system.

Well done Oxfam, keep up the good work.

I trust you will be contacting them to suggest that they support the same measures for those with private tenancies and mortgages?

In fact, why don't we all move to Scotland and stop paying our way! :p

They are only wanting the law changed so as not to have people evicted for falling behind with rent due to government meddling. tenants would still be chased through courts as an ordinary debtors but could not up evicted through possibly paltry amounts owed.

I agree that the sums involved are paltry, which is why I fail to see how anyone would want to risk eviction by not paying them!

Cosla(Convention of Scottish Local Authorities). estimates up to 20% of Scotland's 315,000 council tenants will be affected, and that 40% of them will get into arrears, leaving councils with a £20m a year shortfall, as well as the extra cost of enforcing debts and evictions.

O'Neill, former Labour leader of North Ayrshire, stressed he was not opposed to benefit reform, but said this change could generate greater demands for welfare services.

ive given to oxfam in the past believing they help starving people in Africa not benefit scroungers in the UK have spare bedrooms.

This is ridiculous there are homeless people awaiting homes on 5 year waiting lists.

Paltry is relative, for someone receiving £56 a week, £14 bedroom tax is not a paltry amount, it is a 25% reduction in income.
