remove the lining and wear it with a black waist slip
I would wear it as it is this Friday and worry about it later!

I would take the lining out and replace it with a red waist slip sewn in.

I have thought of an f) option: wear the slip as well as the damaged lining, on the grounds that it's an extra layer and it's flippin' freezing out there! :rotfl:

To wear on Friday, I'd remove the lining now, and wear with a slip at the end of the week. Then when I had time I'd remake the lining and attach it all together again :)

And if I couldn't sew, I'd get someone else to do it after the interview. Especially if it was a classic item that might give me years of wear.

leave it as it is until it falls apart some more
you mean it isn't normal to wear skirts with frayed/falling apart/torn lining? I don't think I've got one where the lining is intact. If I'm wearing it for something important, I at least try to make sure that the lining doesn't hang down below the hem of the skirt... but only if its something important!

It's a funeral, not an interview! DH's aunt, who I met about twice, and I have no idea what to expect in terms of dress code, so going with this skirt, a loose jacket which is also black with dark red patterns, and either or a dark red or pale pink blouse, haven't yet decided. Dark red tights if I can't find thick black ones.

I do have another 'funeral skirt', but that one has small flowers on so more cheerful, not sure if it's OK for this funeral or not. I've worn that one with bright pink tights (although not to the funeral!) and decided from the photos afterwards that that's not a good look ... :rotfl:

Grey shoes and handbag. Light grey coat over my jacket for the outside 'bit'.

All sorted, but should probably try the skirt and slip on tomorrow, then I've got Thursday to panic if it's not sitting right!

Mind you, if it snows this discussion will be academic as I'll be in plain black trousers with pink thermals underneath ...

  • replace the lining entirely
I would probably opt to have the lining replaced--however, I would wear it as is in the meantime, rather than removing it. If you're taking it to a seamstress or tailor, they may want to see how/wear the lining is attached and possibly use the pieces as a pattern. Most will be able to do it without the old lining, but it can make it easier. They can also make sure to properly remove it by unpicking and replacing any relevant seams, rather than just cutting it out which will help to avoid adding bulk to those seams.

I'd just wear it as it is for now and when it got too bad take it out completely.

    replace the lining entirely
Ive done all the options and honestly, even tho its a charity shop find I would take the lining out completely and use it for a pattern for new lining. I am fortunate in that I worked in a garment factory and do know how to sew. Tho I hate it and only do it when forced to!
I have taken linings out and worn the skirt and then found out why it has a lining in the first place! either it wont hang right without one, or the material catches on your tights or skin or, (and this is the worst one - it rides up when you walk, showing off all that lovely thigh fat and cellulite!
  • some more creative option ... (what?)
I am more creative on this. And it involves black, nets, fish and splits.

But not in any particular order!!
