I have a lovely black Jacques Vert skirt with dark red trim, it has a dark red lining.
I realised last time I took it off that the lining is falling apart: it's not the stitching coming undone, one of the panels has frayed away from the seam, and it's too extensive to re-stitch it as I think the lining will then be too small.
So, do I:
a) remove the lining and wear it with a black waist slip
b) leave it until it falls apart some more
c) attempt a repair by adding some more material
d) replace the lining completely
e) some more creative option ...
And if you'd do anything other than a), what difference do you think it would make?
I need to wear the skirt on Friday, btw ...

replace the lining entirelyI can't sew, but it sounds lovely. I would see if I could get the lining replaced. Whenever I try to wear slips it all bunches up.
I would think there is a reason why it had built in lining and that is because it is more flattering than without any.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
replace the lining entirelya good seamstress will replace the lining if you cant do it yourself. a good lining makes the skirt 'hang' properly. and the skirt is not a 'cheap' one, so replacing the lining makes sense financially!0

replace the lining entirelyReplace the lining - if you love the skirt you probably wont be able to get another one for the cost of a repair. You/the mender might be able to use the current lining as a pattern for the repair so I wouldnt be too hasty in cutting it out.As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again0

Should I have mentioned that the skirt came from a charity shop? :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0

To wear on Friday, I'd remove the lining now, and wear with a slip at the end of the week. Then when I had time I'd remake the lining and attach it all together again*2016 - the year of the savings account!*

I hate waist slips with a vengeance. But I can't sew very well.
So I'd be going for option e - give it to mother to sort out with a very pleading look.
Or if I did have to do it myself I'd go for a quick fix for now to sort out with extra material, whilst telling myself I'll reline it properly further down the line. (Probably about 10 years down the line.)All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

So? its a good quality skirt and you are obviously fond of it! to replace it (if you could find one) would prob cost a lot more than having the lining replaced!
(I do apologise for the unintended pun!):)0 -
I would try & find a slip the colour of the lining, take the old lining out & wear the two parts together forever more. Secondry I suppose I would get a seamstress to replace the exact lining..

replace the lining entirelyI would unpick the old lining from the skirt (up around the waistband probably) and use it as a template to make a new one as you can get lining material pretty cheaply. There may be some darts at the top depending on the style but a simple rectangle/square shape will be almost there. I wouldn't bother patching it - most linig materials fray quite easily and if you're going to bother, might as well do it properly. A seamstress shouldn't be too expensive if you want it done quickly and well.0
