26 mpg in stop start urban driving in freezing weather, heater on full blast, or 26 mpg long distance cruising at a steady 70mph on the motorway?

driving is mixed, but mainly short journeys and most of the time i am light on the gas. have to open her up occasionaly though!

i suppose it's not a big problem as i'm only a low mileage driver right now but think i'll be more money saving with my next car.. 40+ mpg would be nice.

Why do people drive Gti,s carefully/slowly...just asking

2.0 8v, so that would have been the Mk4 Golf GTI.

By that point, GTI was just a trim level.

As for the OPs car. It's a 90s hot hatch, from the era before emissions and fuel economy ruled over all. 26mpg isn't that bad. My 1993 2.0T Nissan only gets 22mpg regardless of how you drive it.

Ive had 26 MPG from my diesel in short winter journey's. But on a clear run i can get 60+ MPG.

So 26 MPG in the cold spell for short journeys is quite good actually.

It will get better on longer runs but dont expect miracles, Its not a super efficient modern car.

I'm getting about 38-39mpg from my 1.4 fiesta (11 plate) on fairly local runs, so given the fact your engine is a lot bigger I guess it seems in line.

If your only a low mileage driver, why spend more money on a car, just to save a few mpg? So many people get hung up on mpg but dont do the sums.

I very much doubt you would be any better off financially in a more economical car.

    Are you driving it economically?

After testing my car i found that 5th gear at 40mph actually uses more fuel than staying in 4th gear. Even though your using more revs.

So less revs does not always mean more fuel.

    Try it.

My sister was moaning that her new car was giving bad MPG the other day, she has just brought a big Nissan 4x4 and thought that 40mpg on a run and 28 around town was bad !
