Hello, A newbie here
I am wondering if anyone might be able to diagnose a problem that has developed with the screen on my sons (not quite) two year old netbook?
One minute it was running ok then the last few times we have swiched it on the screen is completely blank (yes that is blank and not black!:D) and white, everything seems to power up ok and it will display on an external monitor but the actual netbook screen is just white,i have tried removing the battery and unplugging from the mains ,holding the power button down for 30-60 seconds but nothing will bring the screen back i have toggled the F5 button and tried to adjust contrast but still nothing? it is less than 2years old!
Any ideas please?
Thanks

Hiya,
That sounds like it's a hardware issue to me. There a cable that connects the screen to the motherboard (inside the netbook) - what your'e describing is symptomatic of there being something wrong with that connection.
The best thing for you to do would be to take it to get repaired. Depending on the use, 2 years is actually quite a long time - especially for a netbook.
If it's not under warranty, definitely a repair shop.
Hope this helps!I love adventures. Unfortunately, I don't get to go on them nearly enough. My simple solution? - To indulge in the digital artefacts of the adventures of others. Feel free to indulge in them with me.

Thank you so much for you reply and yes it does help alot ,do you think this could be caused through the connection burning out maybe due to overheating?
My son has been using it alot more for his GCSE work, so i was just thankful i managed to get it up on a monitor..
I was going to try to claim a repair or replacement from where we bought it under the Consumer rights jargon but if you say two years is a long time for a netbook then i will think again ... thanks again!0 -
Make and model? The current is tiny, not likely to be overheating. more likely the cable is making intermittent contact due to wear and tear caused by opening and shutting of the lid, and consequent stress on the hinges, where the screen cable runs.
If it's an Advent, I've see afew where the hinges are so feeble that they barely last a year in normal use.
Or it could be inverter failure. Take it to a reputable laptop repair shop. But not worth spending a great deal on a 2 year old netbook. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
No problem at all!

Thanks for your reply also, It is a Packard Bell DOT SE710UK
The key pad is extremely flimsy also ,the buttons are held on a one stem plastic thread so that they appear raised and have space between them, this just aids dust getting under the buttons and they really are not very robust.. we payed about £250 for it new, if the problem is as you say, i expect the cost of the repair would not be worth it? a bit annoying as i also bought the full spec microsoft office 2010 (product key ) and that is installed on there too ...
Thank you ever so much for the info!0 -

You can install to another machine if you remove it from that machine. The licence may include installation on more than one machine anyway.0 -

Options:- Never use it again on that machine
- Uninstall it (tricky if you can't see anything)
- Delete everything (ditto)
- Smash the HDD to bits

Unfortunately i bought the product key card rather than the installation disc, apparently you can install three computers with the disc but only one with the PK ..Although i do still have the PK and it does say that i may be able to obtain a backup down load if i contact microsoft office backup .com so cheers for the prompt!
