DFW BREAD Why do children not like it

Okay I am sitting here waiting for my bread to finish in the bread maker :A But why do I bother, my DS1 want to eat white bread, preferably with no crusts:mad: Which costs of course. I now do half and half brown and white flour and the lightest colour setting, but it is getting on my nerves. I mean it is silly to buy a loaf just for his sarnies.Grrr children! I hasten to add that OH and DS2 don't have this issue!

    Hi Chev,

I feel where your coming from. maybe you should just tell him to eat it or go without and remind him he's lucky to even have a square meal a day.

How old his he by the way?

    HI chevalier

I have found that if I make the 'Italian bread' recipe in my breadmaker manual - with white flower and olive oil instead of butter - it comes out pretty much like shop bought white bread, and you can cut it really thin. Give it a go and see if he likes it. I can PM you the recipe if you like.

Hi Seaxwyn - can you send me the recipe as well please?

I don't eat bread because I have a yeast allergy, but everyone else does. Unfortunatley the bread made in the BM doesn't slice thinly meaning that they get through twice as much as they would if it were shop bought!

My kids make different breads in the BM - I just allowed them to experiment. Some strange things coming out, by adding peanut butter or porridge oats, but definately a way of getting them away from the bog standard white loaf without costing loads!

Try making just white bread for a while until he gets used to the new taste and texture? I use Tesco bread flour (so nothing special) and olive oil in the basic bread recipe (Kenwood BM) and it comes out really light in texture. I would even cut the 'straight edge' crusts off to start with. I think you maybe need to 'wean' him onto it; I know others sy 'it's this or nothing!' but the carrot approach may be more successful.

In this house we don't like the mixed white/wholemeal flour loaves but if not white love bread made with granary flour (although this does put the cost up. Keep persevering and good luck.

    hi Sea
Yes please sent me the recipe. I did try with oil but I must have put too much in - very dense and even the birds didn't want it!

He is just about 6 (in JUne).

Having had a moan last night, of course this morning, he didn't say a word!!

And Sea have a good billable day! I AM going to do my reading for my essay today!

Hiya, good luck with persuading him to like the home made bread (send it my way if he wont eat it - I love it!).

My 6 year old is going through a phase of being difficult about some foods (I think this is the age when they realise adults are allowed to make their own decisions about what they like and dislike, and are following suit, seeing how much they can get away with).

Mine has suddenly stopped liking just about every kind of sandwich you can imagine, so I sort of bribe him that if he eats his ham/cheese/tuna etc sandwiches during the rest of the week, he can have banana sandwich (his favourite) on Wednesdays and Fridays. (I know he doesn't throw the others away, because the school make them bring home anything they don't eat....even half pots of yoghurt which make a right mess of his sandwich bag...grrrrr)

Maybe you could try something like that - get a really cheap 19p white loaf, freeze it, and have an agreement with him that if he eats your home made bread for a couple of days, you will then let him have the nasty plastic supermarket bread the next day (just pull out a couple of slices in the morning and they will be defrosted by lunch).

I know you are then rewarding him with something you don't really want him to have, but it might give him chance to give the homemade bread a proper try, and hopefully start liking it more than the bought stuff.
