Hi

I signed up to Npowers Energy Online October 2013, but have had a letter telling me they are putting prices up from March. Can they do this when i signed up to a deal that hasnt run out yet!?

The tariff you chose was not fixed or capped. It offers you a discount from their standard prices. If NPower put their standard prices up, then your prices can go up too as long as you still get the discount.

Like most of these types of tariffs you are guaranteed a discount of x% below the standard rate until Oct 2013.

So as long as your tariff remains x% below the standard tariff, they can raise it as much as they like.

You should be able to reject the increase and stay on the same rates if you act quickly. The notice will explain more.

You will need to switch to another supplier too.
You may wish to opt for a fixed tariff this time

Changing supplier would result in a loss of the annual discount - if joined in October this could be sixty pounds or more by the time a switch goes through. At least the prices are going up at the end of winter. Probably cheaper to ride this one out. (And make sure when the bill comes in that they do not overcharge you by underestimating the price change consumption - on this occasion npower's seasonal weighting may act in their customers' favour.)

I'm on the same tarif and I was not aware that the prices would rise but I phoned up in October/ November to query a few things and found out that it was not fixed. The person on the phone reasured me that my bill would not change even though prices had gone up recently on other tarifs and unless they put their prices up across the board the price of mine would not change (what a load of bull). My discount is in December so for me loosing 2 months discount won't do alot of damage compared to the steep standing charges there are on this tarif.
