VIRUSES RECEIVED when going online

Options
I recently bought a PC and I have now picked up Three Viruses:-

1) Bloodhound.W32.EP
2) Backdoor.Berbew.l
3) Trojan Horse

These Three Viruses were all detected by my Norton Antivirus 2004 professional but Norton was unable to repair them, so my PC is still infected.

Can anyone explain why I am getting these Viruses when I go online????

I also did a Symantec security scan and the result showed that my PC was vunerable. It gave a detailed list of the Ports.

It found:-

Port 113 ( ident/authentication) was open
should this be closed????

Port 135 was also open
should this be CLosed or Stealth????

Port 445( windows NT/2000 SMRS) is open
should this be set to Stealth?????

Port 5000 UPnP ( Universal plug and play) is open
should this port be set to Stealth????

How do I Close or Stealth these Ports??????

Do I need a firewall because I really dont think Norton 2004 professional is protecting me fully?????

I would really appreciate any help at all regarding these matters. Even if the information is small.

Thanks. ??? ??? ???

Does Norton come with a firewall? If not - get one immediately!

  • At the risk of repeating myself from an earlier post, Anti-Virus software is not a firewall. I do not know if the Norton product you have contains both, but if it is just an AV package, then you do need a firewall in addition.

Assuming you are running Windows XP, you might want to download and install the security patches from Microsoft via Windows Update. The holes that these patches plug can prevent some virus/trojan infections and are pretty much essential, regardless of a firewall or antivirus program.

I would recommend any unused ports are set to stealth (ie - to give no response if pinged). For a simple check and more details, see http://grc.com and use the 'Shields Up' utility there, checking 'File Sharing' and 'All Service Ports' as a minimum. (From the site homepage, click on 'Shields Up', then scroll down to 'Hot Spots' on the resulting page, then click 'Shields Up' (the second in the Hot Spots list.))
