Incomplete Boot-UP!

Recently my win7 PC as failed to boot up properly.
It quite often stops about half way though and then "freezes". This seems to happen about once per 3 boots. The other times it boots up normally.
The only back is to switch off power and reboot again.

Any ideas how to get a smooth normal boot-up?

  • Do you have any USB storage devices plugged in? External hard drives, memory sticks, etc? Those make mine freeze sometimes.

I'd also advise you, if you aren't already, to start backing up your data. Could be a hard drive on the way out.

...or a suspect service trying to start/race condition with some cr4ppy software causing unpredictable startup - maybe see if safe mode will boot up reliably, then hack about with msconfig to see what you can knock out of the startup routine

maybe something dodgy got on there. Boot up in safe mode and do a system restore to the last date you knew it booted ok. Not used W7 but in xp to do this you choose safe mode and it gives you the option to do a restore ( very safe you won't lose any data ). Otherwise press F1 on the desktop and it will be an option in there also.

    Or the PSU...

    Thanks for all your hints.

As a first step I am making a complete image back-up to external disk.--just in case . It will take many hours!

Apart from my resident external disk, I have no other data storage and I don't leave USB pens plugged in.

Will let you know my progress.
