Hi all,
I have booked a domain name with 123Reg and alreadydesigned my site in Frontpage ready to upload. Bought the basic hosting package from 123Reg.
I did not buy the Frontpage extensions as I think £25 for them is a rip-off - can anyone recommend a good FTP programme and advise how I can create the website in Frontpage, and then use the FTP programme to upload it to 123Reg?
Alternatively I don't mind using another programme that you recommend to both edit & publish/FTP the site all in one go, as long as it is free

I use this, it's discontinued but free and pretty good

Frontpage is a pile of pants, download a demo of dreamweaver or learn HTML and css if you want to do a better job of it0 -
Hi Ringo, thanks for that - I know HTML but just can't be bothered this time around & wanted something quick to get the site 'up there' and started... will check that out tomorrow - thanks xMFW #185

I used to use WS_FTP, but now use Smart FTP which is free for personal use.

Its benefit is that you can use one panel as an explorer window if you're working on files at the same time as uploading them.0 -
FileZilla is arguably the best ftp client about. Light and stable, and completely free. And it's not on the verge of being re-written and available on multiple platforms.

With regards to Frontpage I don't favour it due to the code it produces. It's not a bad WYSIWYG editor, but its code is bloated and sometimes not standard compliant. It'll often look fine in IE, but not much else.
Dreamweaver is said to be the best WYSIWYG editor, but it costs quite a bit. You could try the 30 day trial though.
Also NVU is a very good free alternative.

Hi guys thanks for all the responses - just to clarify, which one should I use that is both suitable for editing the website AND FTP purposes?
As long as it works with 123Reg and is reliable I am happy to try it.
Many thanks xMFW #185

If you're using Firefox there's an add-on called Fire-FTP which isn't too bad.0

Sorry McFisco, not using Firefox - Frontpage is all I have and I am trying to not use that and find a free other web programme that includes FTP...MFW #185

Eager, just use a separate web design tool and FTP client.. it's not too tricky
Hell, you can FTP using the command line in windows, no special software needed (not a great idea for newbies, but i use it at work all the time)0 -
Thanks Ringo - will start investigating!MFW #185

Dreamweaver has an FTP client built in, would highly recommend you download the trial, easily the best/most useful web design tool out.0
