Advice Needed re faulty kitchen applicance rights

Hi, could anyone please advise what to do with this please?
I have a smeg dishwasher and the door handle has broken inside the door - it's just over 18 months old.
I would have expected a dishwasher to be used for a lot longer than 18 months before the door handle would give up on me, and called smeg expecting them to fix it for nothing but they want me to pay nearly £150 for an engineer to come and repair it!
I could nearly buy another dishwasher for that much.
Surely it is reasonable to expect the door handle on a dishwasher to last longer than 18 months, so how would I go about making a formal complaint about the dishwasher not being fit for purpose and whom should I contact to make a formal complaint, as I am rather confused by the consumer rights laws that people talk about.
I would have thought I have a right to expect something so fundamentally simple as a door on a dishwasher to last a lot longer than 18 months, but don't know if there is legislation that covers this so any advice would be much appreciated.
