787 Dreamliner

Boeing has warned customers awaiting delivery of new 787 Dreamliners to expect delays, amid a continuing investigation into their safety.

Deliveries of the planes in the near future have either been delayed or are at risk of postponement, the airliner manufacturing giant said.

Customers expecting delivery of 787s soon include the UK's Thomson Airways and Norwegian Air Shuttle.

Investigations are continuing into the safety of the 787s batteries.

The entire fleet of 787s was grounded last month after a battery on one plane caught fire, while a malfunction forced another to make an emergency landing.
Contingency plans
On Thursday US regulators said they would allow Boeing to carry out test flights of 787 Dreamliner planes to test battery performance.

Both Thomson Travel and Norwegian Air Shuttle, a budget airline, have been told to expect delays and are making contingency plans.

Thompson was due to receive its first 787s at the end of February.

The airlines said they had not been given new delivery dates for the planes, which Boeing has touted as its most energy-efficient and economical airliner to date.

So far 50 Dreamliners have been delivered to airlines by Boeing, but all are currently grounded while safety checks are carried out.

A further 473 have been ordered by at least 44 different airlines around the world.


I am due to go on my honeymoon 3rd june 2013 - flying with thomson and on this plane. we were originally going to book a thomas cook excluisve hotel but after going to thomson we saw a hotel they say matched up to the one we liked and this plane sold the holiday to us - as a long haul flight in a thomas cook plane is not as enjoyable (as we have experienced).

My question is are we entitled to some sort of insurance as the 787 dreamliner is a new, high spec plane - that thomsons ''replacements/rented'' are not going to live up to the legroom, seats on back of tvs (with touch and library of movies to choose) or ipod/iphone adapters which can showcase your content on your tv.

I know my fiancee and i are very lucky to be able to go on such a holiday/honeymoon at all and do not want to sound selfish or big headed by the points i have made however we did pay more than what we would if we went on a 'regular thomson plane' and i would guess a new travel - time, day, airport may change??

A plane, is a plane, is a plane.

And, when I book a flight I pay for it to get me from A to B safely, and punctually.
The rest is just detail.

Your agreement with Thomson probably won't say anywhere B787, I'd just look forward to the holiday, and if it isn't a B787 write in post holiday saying you were disappointed.

Even if the holiday was advertised on being on the 787 I'm sure the small print gives them enough wiggle room. No company would ever sell a holiday on a plane that they didn't have (or even one they did have) without suitable legal protection.

Thomson's only commitment is to get you from airport A to airport B and back again. The 787 promo was just that, a well intentioned marketing campaign.

We've just come back from hols with Thomson and I remember seeing in the brochure that the dreamliner was only available on certain flights for the summer and that a supplement would be charged for those. I would get a copy of the brochure and read the small print but the likelihood is that all you would get back is the supplement. Have you booked a premium cabin seat as that makes a big difference if the dreamliner is not available.

The T&C'S will allow them to change flights/airlines/airports etc. Where customers stand with the fact they paid a premium I don't know? Although from a PR point of view you'd think thomson may refund the premiums as a good will gesture if you don't end up on one.

One thing to remember its all out of Thomson's control. And as others have said, it's only a method of transport, look forward to the honeymoon!

They will refund any premium paid for the "enhanced"/ premium economy cabin, but not those that have paid for the main cabin.
