Poor video=High ping?

Can someone have a look at my stats and give an interpretation please. I don't know much about broadband issues I'm afraid. I get problems with streaming which I guess is down to my high ping result?

My speeds are good however I have noticed that my pings are way to high.I have recently changed to TalkTalk and have never had issues with pings like this. Is there a solution for this?

All tests done direct to the master socket

for you to send a message from your machine to another somewhere in the ether and get a reply, in a third of a second, is quite fast and unlikely to be connected with streaming problems which are downloading.

300ms is pretty shocking as a ping time to a nearby server, however, which speedtest.net selects. I see 30ms, and 300ms from anywhere in the UK to anywhere else in the UK (speedtest have loads of UK servers) would be pretty appalling. High ping times aren't of themselves a problem for much other than gaming, but 300ms is ludicrously high, and probably indicates something else is awry.
  • Now gone down to 47ms, icould the high pings be caused by my isp doing something at peak times?

  • Just used Pingtest and got:-

    Ping 64ms, packet loss 0%, jitter 3ms

Guessing that the results now are quite good?

    Hi

A ping time for 300 for a trip of less than 50 miles is terrible - fullstop

A RRT (round trip time) of 300 from London to Hongkong to acceptable !

One question, are you streaming to a laptop that is connecting via Wi-Fi or a device that is connected directly (via ethernet cable) to the router ?

Depending on what package/monthly subscription you have you will find that some providers slow right down in the evenings as there are lots of people surfing the net - This is know as Contention. The cheaper the subscription the higher the contention rate.

    Hope this helps

Funny you should mention that. I am on TalkTalk essentials and I do stream via W-Fi, the test results were taken whilst connected to the master socket and connected to laptop via ethernet.
In my limited knowledge I couldn't understand why streaming constantly buffers even though my download speeds are quite high.

Does that mean that even download speeds are showing high on Speedtest 'Contention' can still cause buffering?

Ah but are you measuring your download speed from the same server that is providing the streaming video? I think not. A high download speed from one part of the web doesn't mean you'll get a high speed from a different part. The server providing the stream may be overloaded or the transit path in use from there to your ISP may be suffering high contention. VM run some of their peering links at loads close to causing the fibre to melt (OK not literally). I suspect that as TalKTalk is a budget provider they may well do the same thing as the motive is money saving.

    I'm confused! Post 11 here...https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4123889

'If you plug your router into Talktalk's MSAN at your exchange , your router will sync at the full 24 meg with actual speeds >20 meg. That's guaranteed'

All that is saying is that the maximum possible sync is 24Mbps and anything less is down to the line (mostly this will be the attenuation caused by the length). The bit about minimum 20Mbps down is saying that the TalkTalk backhaul from the exchange to their data centre and all the rest of the internet will guarantee you 20Mbps minimum.

I'd say that the first part is almost certainly true but the second part is arrant nonsense. Even the backhaul could be overloaded causing congestion let alone anything past that.
