  • Did you get a new account set up in your name first? If not, then you might be paying off previous tenant debt. You must have your own account with a new card issued. Did you take meter readings when you moved in.

Only one tariff with each provider on each meter type.

You have no idea what your consumption is going to be so stick with it for a month or so reading the meter regularly then take a guess based on usage so far as to what your annual consumption could be and compare tariffs online. You might want to consider switching to a credit meter where you can get online direct debit tariffs and save compared to a standard tariff (i.e the prepayment meter). However, many tariffs require you stay with them for a multiple of 12 months to get the benefit of the discounts so you really should aim to be in the property long term.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Horseunderwater is right. If you do not get a new card in your name, then the previous tenant will get a refund of everything you have paid and you will get a bill.
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, then perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away. thoreau
  • when i put the card in the meter it topped it up straight away - there was a couple of pounds left on it and my money added on to this. I have taken note of the meter reading but was told by the landlord that the electric used to be on a pre-pay meter but the previous tenant changed it to a normal meter where you pay monthly etc. I need to set up my own account with e-on for electric which i am going to do monday thanks

forgive me but i dont understand how this can be the case? if when the previous tenant left the meter showed credit and i topped on top of this how can i be paying off her debt and furthermore a bill ? when the credit is going down as i am consuming the gas how can i receive a bill?

    thanks

The PPM is not a vending machine; it is simply a device to help you not accrue large debts you cannot afford to repay.

You have an account no matter what type of meter you have.
If you have a PPM, then payments made on that payment card are used to pay for the energy you consume.
The PPM will stop you using energy that has not been paid for in advance.

However, if you are using someone else's card, then you are crediting their account everytime you top up the card.

You in the meantime are using energy and your account is not being credited with any money you spent.

    :(Hi snowfairy84

Already some excellent advice on here. Thanks all.

As others have said, we need to set up a new account in your name from the day you took over responsibility for the property.
You'll need separate accounts for the electric and gas.

With the gas being on a prepayment meter, we'll send you a new card. This will clear down all previous settings on the meter.

If there was debt set on the meter belonging to the previous tenant, the new card will clear this too.

It'll also make sure all the payments made are credited to your account.

Periodically, we'll send you a statement. This will show all the payments you've made and how we've calculated your usage. It's not a bill but a record of payments/charges.

Sometimes, though, statements can show a debit balance. One reason for this is, when the wrong card has been used to top up, payments are allocated to another account.

Don't worry. If you call us, we'll set up the account properly and send you another card to make sure this doesn't happen. We'll also transfer any payments you've made on the old card to the new account.

Hope this helps. Give me a shout if you need any more info as happy to help.

OP: to answer your original question, PPM's cost the same as the supplier's Standard credit meter tariff.
