Temporary car insurance for my own car

I need a temporary insurance for my own car for few days, max 2-3 weeks.
As usual, I have called Directline, where I hold my insurance for my main car, but I was told that their temporary insurance does not cover cars owned by me. Car apparently must be owned by somebody else and only used by me. Advisor even told initially that is should be insured by the owner, but was happy to sell insurance even if it isn't.

So how does it work? I used this cover to drive any new car home or to do buy tax or take my car to the MOT station.

the car I want to insure is my old car. It is SORN declared and I want to sell it, so have to take to the MOT, get TAX and do a test drive with any potential buyer.

Could anyone advise details of this cover, and any way to insure my OWN car temporarily without paying a fortune.
Thank you

I've already tried it and it cost a fortune (min £180 for 2 weeks)

I think I will switch car on my insurance, use the second one for a week or two and then switch back to my old one.

Apart form the theft/damage risk whilst your new car is uninsured the other problem is that if it's not insured then it should be sorn and tax disc needs to go back. I'd guess you could get away without sorn for a couple of weeks.

It used to be that insures would happily (and cheaply) cover two cars whilst you were changing but I suppose that's gone the way of most useful customer services

The other option is to take out a new policy on your old car and then cancel when you sell it but that's not a cost or risk free option either

I recently insured my own car for a day with Aviva so that I could take it for an MOT. It cost about £20.

Are you covered to drive any car on your current insurance policy, or could you get someone that is, to drive it?

"Driving other cars" cover almost always excludes cars which you own, are the keeper of, or are leasing / hiring / buying on finance; to stop people buying one policy but driving several cars.

In many cases (but not always) it also requires the car being driven to have its own policy.

So whoever is to be driving needs to check their cover very carefully. Remember - driving without insurance is an absolute offence and there is no defence of "an honest mistake"

The car will need its own policy anyway, to tax it.

You probably weren't covered. This is for cars not owned by you.

It sounds like you were asking about 'Driving other cars' extension.

Just ask if you can add a temporary vehicle for a few weeks. This is different from 'driving other cars'.

Why not sell it "As is, Where is" and let the new owner deal with it? I realise it could be difficult without test driving etc. Depends what price bracket it's in I suppose.

buying anythiing online covers you under the distance selling regs and you get 14 days to change your mind by law, so if you buy an insurance policy online and decide to cancel within the allowed 14 days all they are allowed to do is charge you pro rata for the 13 days they covered you for and add a small administration fee for their troubles, usually works out about £30 for the admin fee :-)
