Over the years I have tried every kind available, but since I have DD with psoriasis, DS with eczema, I have allergies and DH was sensitive to loads of stuff I always end up back with persil, and currently if I use softener it has to be fairy but only buy it when on offer or in b&m, home bargains etc as its flipping dear. The only one I had a problem with fading etc was fairy powder/liquid.

I only tend to use the sainsburys basics biological powder for washing the dog towels and a good scoop in the roasting tin (with boiling water) for soaking that. Other than that I tend to buy the branded Ariel and Fairy when they have the big boxes on offer.

I still buy the fabric softener separately because I like the scent that it leaves on the fabrics.

For my woollens I use a separate detergent from Lakeland Limited called Wool mix which is gorgeous and has a lavender scent to it. I look after my clothes so try to make sure that I use the appropriate detergent for the items. I have not used own brand or anything like that to date as the Which? surveys are still saying that branded comes out best Ariel followed by Persil so that influences my decision.

  • I always use biological liquid and find that for the majority of my washing the value brands are just as effective. I've used Mr T Everyday and Mr S Basics, both fine. Just make sure you follow the instructions on how much to use, my biggest fault is popping a drop more in for good measure  although I do have a larger load washing machine.

Fabric softeners are a different story in my view. The branded ones do seem to soften and smell better, so I buy them, but only when on half price. Having said that, of all the value options, Mr S Basics Fabric Conditioner isn't bad at all for the price.

Happy cut price wash day :).

    Keep Smiling :)
  • I always used to use Daz Biological but have now switched to Almat Biological from Aldi.
Half the price, nicer smell and the washing comes out as good as ever - what's not to like? :T
    Normal people worry me.

Either the lidl or Aldi own brands for me, use under half the recommended amount, washing comes out clean. But fabric conditioner I stopped using around 6 years ago when ds had v sensitive skin and I've never bothered buying it since, and really notice the artificial smell on the clothes of people who use a lot!

  • I've always bought branded washing powder but only what is on offer.
Just wondering which powder you all use and if shop brand how it compares in quality and price compared to branded powder!
    Thanks x

I just bought last week the soap nuts that were on a thread in here. Don't know where i originally found the thread, but the company was called 'in a soap nut shell'

I have been using them for a week now. The clothes come out clean and super soft without fabric softener. They aren't actually nuts either but a seed pod in case someone asks. I actually like them. They dont leave a scent on your clothes, but they are so soft :)
And they don't have whiteners so once in a while i will have to add bleach to the whites, but the colours will hold longer because there are no whiteners. They state that a kilo bag should last about a year, and its £13 or so.

    Hope this helps!
