New fuel pump?

Options
I have a 1.2 2004 VW Polo which I recently had serviced.

The mechanic mentioned that he noticed the fuel pump was extremely noisy and caused excessive vibration of the fuel tank. He suggested the bearings within the electric motor were probably worn and recommended that the fuel pump should be replaced asap.

Although I hadn't noticed this before, I now appreciate the loud groaning noise coming from under the back seats when starting the engine.

However the car has never displayed any typical symptoms of fuel pump failure and seems to be working fine, including at high speeds and when pulling away.

Should I be concerned about a loud fuel pump?

It hasn't failed yet but it will if it's worn.

Should you be concerned? That depends on whether you want to miles away from home when it does fail ;)

All VAGs seem to do this if they've consistently been run low in fuel. Some soldier on for years moaning away though.

Only be concerned if breaking down will concern you.

If your not bothered about breaking down somewhere then ignore it. When it breaks down, Hope its not in the middle of nowhere on a blind bend at midnight and raining.

You have breakdown cover dont you?

Eye ... its often rust from the tank (running low/out of fuel) getting to the pump causes the problem sometimes cleaning the pump and putting in an inline filter can help - depends on how hands on you are.
