Registered Keeper Query

Morning everyone, quick question:

I own a car (vehicle A), I am the registered keeper and have full insurance on it.

I am purchasing a new car (vehicle B).

Vehicle A isn't needed for trade-in. My son's car is currently off the road (sorn). Can I let my son be the new main driver of vehicle A, on his own full insurance when I get the new car, and can I remain registered keeper?

I guess I am asking can I legally be the registered keeper of 2 vehicles A & B, but the main driver of only 1? I am the legal owner of both after all.

You can although you will find it difficult to find an Insurer who will accept your son taking out a car registered in someone else's name.
  • Yes you can.

Whether or not your son will get insurance is another matter.
  • So it would be advisable to make him the registered keeper? A bit faffy, but not a problem I guess - except he too is registered keeper of his own car at the moment, even though it is off the road.

It will be a lot easier (Read cheaper) for him to get Insurance if you register it in his name.

If it's just a temporary measure and he has an existing policy, the current Insurer may allow it for a short time.

N.B if your son has a current policy, his no claims bonus will be tied up with that policy, if you get quotes for an additional policy enter he has nil no claims bonus although if he rings around especially with his own insurer he may find it's possible for it to be mirrored on the second policy.
  • Get him to ring his insurance company or a good broker before adding another keeper.

    Rubbish

My daughters car was registered in my name for 2 years BUT insurance in her name due to a private plate bought in my name

all legal and above board ,the insurance company charged £25 extra for the car registered to me

"I guess I am asking can I legally be the registered keeper of 2 vehicles A & B, but the main driver of only 1? I am the legal owner of both after all. "

I was the registered keeper of 3 cars

Mine .. myself as main driver on my insurance
the wife's ... me as named driver on her insurance
the daughters .... me as named driver on her insurance
