Hi,
A friend of mine uses computer almost exclusively for using his local football team.
When people leave messages, they quite often leave a link which comes up in a different colour and you click on it to be taken to another web site etc as I'm sure all you experts know.
All of a sudden, clicking on the link does nothing, and if you press ctrl, alt del, it says something like programme not responding.
I tried the same web site when I got home from his place, and checked on my computer and could click on the links with no problem. I thought there might have been a problem on the web site.
I did run a virus check on his computer and there were trojan horse viruses on there which were healed by the avg free programme, but tried it after and still no luck.
I don't know much about computers, as you've probably guessed, but I was just wondering if tha viruses had done something.
Any ideas on how he can get the links working again.
Thanks for any help,
regards
bill

I'd guess you haven't quite found all the viruses yet.
Here's a copy of a regular post in a microsoft support forum on how to clear viruses and then stay clear...
Run these programs to check for spyware/malware. After installing
update them, then boot into safe mode and run them. You should update
and run them weekly.
Cwshredder
http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php#cwshred
Ad-aware SE
http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org
Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner
http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10247783.html
Pest Patrol Free Pest Scanner
http://www.pestscan.com/ScanOrTrial.asp
If you’re still having problems after running these then run HijackThis
and post the log to one of the specialty forums, _NOT_ this one.

After your system is clean use these programs to help keep it clean:
Spywareblaster
https://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html
Spywareguard
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html
IE-SPYAD

For viruses, run at least two of these online scans in addition to your
regular up to date AV program:
Online and Downloadable Virus Scanning:
Panda ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Bit Defender Online Virus Scan:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php
Symantec Online Virus and Security Scan:

TrendMicro:

McAfee Online Virus Scan:

RAV AntiVirus - Scan Online

Online Virus Scans:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp

Also Run your updated AV Program
Follow through with preventative measures

Try re-registering the IE dll's.
This behavior may occur for any of the following reasons:
The (Default) value setting in one or more of the following registry keys points to an incorrect location for the Urlmon.dll file:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\!!79eac9e0-baf9-11ce-8c82-00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\!!79eac9f1-baf9-11ce-8c82-00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\!!79eac9f2-baf9-11ce-8c82-00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]
The following registry key is missing or damaged:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\!!00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
One or more of the following files is missing, damaged, or improperly registered:
Url.dll
Mshtml.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Shell32.dll
Shdocvw.dll
To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
Quit all programs that are running.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK. (This will re-register the file in the system registry)
When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
Reregister each of the files below in turn.
Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)
If the problem is still not resolved, verify that the following registry values are present and correct:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\!!00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Name: (Default)
Value: IDispatch
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\!!00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid
Name: (Default)
Value: !!00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\!!00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid32
Name: (Default)
Value: !!00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
If the problem is still not resolved, reinstall Internet Explorer. If you are using the version of Internet Explorer that is included with your operating system, reinstall or repair your operating system.
