NPower Meter Reading Error - HELP PLEASE

Well I've signed up for MSE Cheap Energy Club tonight and thank goodness I did! In the process of signing up I went onto my online account for NPower to get my tariff details and my usage. NPower claim to have read the meters on 15th Jan. They may have read the electric meter at the front of the house but I'm pretty certain they can't have read the gas meter, it's in the back garden and you have to move all our garden furniture to get to it and it hasn't been touched (unless they've been and put everything back EXACTLY as it was) and according to the meter reading from 15th Jan we've used 99688 cubic metres of gas in 6 months!!!

I am  at the error but also  that they've either LIED about taking a meter reading or they've taken one and then entered a digit wrong, I'm thinking if they did take a reading on 15/01/13 then it was probably 2722 rather than 2122.

It was too late to ring customer services so I've lodged a complaint online. Reading on 16/07/12 was 2434 and they claim it was 2122 when they "read" it on 15/01/13?? The actual reading this evening is 2826. I am flabbergasted and quite concerned about this being sorted as the bill would be ASTRONOMICAL

Have tried to update my account tonight by entering meter readings online but it says I can't because the reading we've just taken of 2826 is IMPLAUSIBLE given the previous reading on 15/01/13 of 2122. SURELY when they entered their alleged reading of 2122 leading to a calculation of 99688 cubic metres usage in 6 months they must have received and error message that it was IMPLAUSIBLE??

Thank goodness for MSE :money: or I wouldn't have noticed this until I got our next scheduled bill in July which would probably have cost more than our house is worth!!

Hoping for a speedy resolution to my complaint but they aren't open now until 8am Monday - does anybody have any experience of this sort of thing happening to them? If so, what was the outcome?

They did the same with me, telephoned through and had it rectified. Although in my case, they'd read it as an imperial rather than metric.

90000 cubic meters is about a million kWh.
A million kWh would be, over 6 months (4000 hours) 250kW.
You can't get this amount out of a domestic gas supply, even if you hacksaw off the pipe after the meter.
There will be no trouble correcting the error, and there is no chance of you being liable for this amount.
Do contact them, though, it's possible that if their computers are spectacularly badly programmed that this will not be picked up before generating a bill.
  • mistaking a seven for a one is prob the most common mess -up. so is 9 and 4 with digital meters. a simple mistake easily rectified. We make these sort of mistakes because of the occupier making our job difficult by putting tonnes of stuff in front of awkwardly placed meters.

Thanks for your responses everyone, much appreciated. Although I don't see how the figures on a meter can look different because we have stuff in our garden which needs to be moved to get to the meter ;)

when we starr looking at meters from an angle or from above and below, easy mistake, people go out of there way to make sure the actual meters are blocked, you would nt believe how daft people are and inconsiderate. outside in back garden no excuse for a meter read mess up tho. Just a half asleep monkey
