Iphone backup/restore

Hi

I have a problem with my iphone 4 on version 5.1.1 that I hope somebody can help me with.
Last night I was using it to try and search for something on the app store - as soon as I tried to type something, it kicked me out of the app. I tried again a few times but it kept doing it. I also tried to acccess a couple of other apps (can't remember which ones) and it did the same. I then turned my phone off completely, upon re-starting the apps were working fine. So I thought all was ok.... until today and I've noticed that all my contacts have disappeared. It still shows all my recent calls, just shows them all as unknown rather than as a contact I have saved. Quick search on Google brings up that others have had this issue this week (as well as others that have had it previously.)

I have a back up of my phone from Nov 2012, which I assume includes my contacts (hope so anyway), so I could restore that. However this is where I don't really understand Itunes and can't find a definite answer on the net. Presumably if I restore from that back up, I will lose any changes/additions to photos, notes, messages etc that I have made since November. If I make a back up of my phone as it is now, and then restore it using the Nov 2012 backup, can I somehow then restore part of the back up I do today (i.e photos, texts, calendar etc)?

I hope that makes sense and somebody knows what I am asking (I have difficulty explaining myself sometimes )

Many thanks

  • You can't pick and choose from separate back ups unfortunately.

I personally would take it Apple for a look. I am guessing with it being the iPhone 4 that it will be out of warranty though?

Is there any reason why you are only running iOS 5.1.1? It's up to 6.1 now so perhaps you should update and see if that fixes things for you?
  • thanks for taking the time to reply. All is ok with the phone now, apart from the lost contacts. My gut feeling was that I wouldn't be able to cherry pick as it were from the backups, but as I really don't seem to get on too well with itunes I was hoping that there was something I was missing. As for updating it, it's mainly down to laziness. I never like to update as soon as a new one comes out, but even then I never seem to get round to it - hence why I haven't got a backup of my phone since November (although I am usually better with laptop backups).

    Thanks again
