And how many years ago was this?mishkanorman wrote: »So how much involvement are you expecting him to take ? do you wear contact lenses ?
I have seen many a fully grown adult fail to grasp how important care of the lenses and eyes are, even if an optician is happy to supply them the potential for long term problems brought on by decisions about your child that you are making for them is too greater risk IMHO,
Where did I say I was making the decision for him?
Please don't dress this up as a parent forcing something on a child.
He asked, I enquired as to the possibility, was told it IS possible hence the appointment to go through everything properly. If I'm not happy (or he's not happy) then that's the end of it. No drama really.
I do wear contacts myself.0 -

He is a minor so you are making the final decision - hence me saying the decision for him, I was not suggesting you are forcing it on him but you certainly are entertaining it far more than I feel a guardian should.
I was dressing it up as nothing, please dont ask for experiences and then continue to dismiss them - at 6 he is still very young for such a big responsibility and whilst it may technically be possible it will most certainly not be easy for you or him.Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0 -
I do think its important that you consider what will happen if something goes wrong or he loses a lens when he's not with you. On a school trip, at a friend's house, at grandma's, at cubs, wherever.
I imagine that this is the reason why most opticians recommend waiting until the child is old enough to deal with these situations themselves.0 -

He may be a minor but he's not a baby. At nearly 7 he's more than capable of voicing his opinion on the situation and has already done so hence asking me in the first place.
Ill update when he's had his appointment. Until then I'm more than happy to hear of any experiences with children of similar age. An opinion however I don't have to agree with. The beauty of an internet forum and all that.0 -
experiences or opinions ?
You seem to be muddling the two.Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0 -

i did see your post detailing experiences of children 10+ (which I did find useful) and your questioning the school policy (again helpfully pointed out)
I don't however agree with your opinion that if a child is not able to take control over something then they are not mature enough for it full stop. In this specific situaton i don't agree with that.
Of course as the OP if I have a differing opinion to a poster that simply MUST mean I'm dismissive right?
Experience vs opinion.
I hope this clears up your confusion.0 -

People are often less keen to help an OP who sounds a bit snotty towards other posters. Be careful of that.0 -

I do love forum politics.
I wonder what your post count has to be before its considered ok?0 -
Will he be able to cope if a lense falls out when you are not around? I don't think most 6 year olds would.0
