Different car on insurance after accident

Hi All

Wasn't sure if this ought to go in the insurance section or here but opted for this one as it might attract some advice from motorists less green around the gills than myself.

My 2001 Nissan Almera was written off last week after being hit in the rear by a security van (the reinforced type that carry money). My insurance weren't terribly helpful throughout but the other insurance co have been great in terms of providing a courtesy car and keeping in touch.

I decided to look at getting a little Micra to serve as a cheap interim car that I might get a year or so out of while I save for a better car but I called my insurance company today and was told it would be around £200 more. I need a car and I'm fed up paying the extra £45 a week insurance (I need this to avoid a possible £250 excess should anything happen to the hire car).

Did a price comparison check and all companies pretty much the same price.

What I want to ask is: Can I recoup any of additional insurance premium from the other insurance company?

Cheers

The 3rd party should be covering you for a car to get around in?
  • They are but there is a £250 excess that I would have to pay, regardless of fault, should the car get damaged. I live in the centre of Newcastle and it's a dead cert something will happen to the car if I don't pay the extra insurance. I'm having that kind of luck at the moment!

But you will claim this cost back wont you?

£45 a week to cover the excess is OTT.

    Eh?

They're giving you a hire car - no you can't claim the cost of insuring another vehicle back.

You can't use the 'what if the hire car got damaged' argument - what if I drove to the shops now and my car got taken out by a bus? What if a motorbike hit me while getting out of the car?

The world is full of what ifs, you can only go on the facts of what IS happening.

What is happening is that you have a hire car, you're CHOOSING to pay the extra £45 a week to cover the excess.
If something happens to the hire car, you claim that back from whoever did the damage.

You're onto a no-deal with this. Use the hire car.
  • Sorry guys.....I should have been clearer. It's the additional £200 that my insurance company wants from me to pay to change the car on the policy to the micra that I'm questioning not the extra £45 per week for the hire car. I'd pay that every time for peace of mind.

I realise I'm probably onto a non-starter with it and I'm probably gonna have to suck it up and pay it despite the fact that had someone not hit my car I wouldn't be out of pocket at all. My insurance was all paid up for a year in January and should not have cost me an extra penny.

    Ah well!!

You cannot expect the third party to pay your premium alteration for your choice of a new car!
