So what do you do if they don't respond? To be perfectly honest I can't face speaking with them on the phone and dread it if they ring

    Hi Humph,

Just to make you aware, HMRC are NOT obliged to accept any proposals that StepChange make on your behalf, to clear your £6k tax debt, if the proposed time scale is to long.

What type of tax debt is it ? (VAT/SA/PAYE).

Thanks - I've actually spoken to them independently. It was PAYE but despite them having P45 and P35 in the year of redundancy (2008) they didn't send me a P800 calculation until Jan 2012 - I have tried appealing but to no avail and now they have put it into Self Assessment.

Thanks everyone for the words of support - it does suck being in this position but onwards - I will beat this and become debt free before I reach 60 !

Thats the tax man for you!

At least its priority debt for your DMP so everyone else has to wait, could work in your favour as daft as it sounds. More likely they will get the cobb on and default you and stop interest so you should be free earlier.

We will be here for you regardless

Thanks for the welcome. It's quite daunting doing it by yourself  but I do feel better having got the letters written. Do credit card people usually get back to you fairly quickly?

Took about two weeks for all the cc companies to get back to me, hope you get the same responses as I did, they were all helpful and I felt a lot less stressed , good luck :)

Just write again and make your proposed payments on time, I'm sure they will get back to you. To stop them calling I changed all my phone numbers online to made up ones! If they can't call you they will write to you! Also in your letters to them stress that you want to be contacted by letter only, if they do keep ringing this can be harassment and it is not permitted! Stay strong :D

I will look forward to hearing about his progress. How are the spreadsheets coming along?

Good thanks HH, although they don't seem to make the money stretch any further but at least I know what is costing me over the budget and it is usually the food bill. I was hoping when the new Aldi store opened we would save more but it hasn't worked out that way. They are very good for some things but I can't get everything we need in there. However I pass a Morrisons now I am in my new job so Waitrose doesn't see me much any more:rotfl:

I didn't do anything and waited for the next statement to come through, and that was the first inkling I had of them accepting my reduced payments and stopping interest. Most of my creditors stopped interest within the first couple of months except for the Hellifax.

  • Hello All

Just wanted to pop in and say welcome to all the newbies on here and to wish you luck on your journey. My fellow DMPers have as ever given their excellent advice so there is very little to add.

I hope everyone else also has a good week, and that finances are still on track for everyone.

A colleague tells me that there a few certains in life, death, tax and that if it has balls or tyres it's going to cost you!

    HHx

I just have to say HH that is has to be the most accurate description of my life in one sentence, I love it :D
