DMP & Mutual Support Thread - Part 9

  • Hi all, glad to hear you're all having progress!

Well, after making 'that' call today, I got told by the guy at Step Change that bankruptcy is the only way forward for me!! I've not got my head stuck in the sand, very far from it infact, but I think the way he did my income and expenditure was completely wrong - he added 'extras' in where I don't pay them out (and probably never will!) and after coming to the conclusion that I had £183 a month spare, promptly threw that into the food allowance and declared the only way forward was to find the court fee and declare myself bankrupt! I disagree and have done my own I&E, which I will send to creditors with a covering letter and try to do a DMP myself. My question is; has anyone else done this? Ultimately the debt is still mine even if SC were involved so I assume I'm just cutting out the middle-man by doing this? Please don't think that I'm not taking SC's advice, I just think that bankruptcy is a far more drastic move than a DMP and when I mentioned one, the guy instantly dismissed it saying that he would only entertain the idea if I could find another £200 a month income, whereas due to my own calculations I could afford to do £241 a month and that's with me being alot more generous with my budget than what I am now! If I can't do this and it fails then he may be right but surely I have to try all other avenues first?

We started off with Stepchange, then CCCS, but after a few months moved to a self managed DMP which has been very successful.

It's the CAB's own self managed DMP, all done online and it's brilliant.

Definitely do not give up, you can do this.

So worth those letters and stamps.. and of course a huge thank you to the FOS and the lovely posters on here who without sharing this type of information I would never have known how to manage my dmp. :T

Good result with the rugby yesterday but condolences to my Welsh supporting DMP friends. If it helps I did think Wales had the most handsome team?

Living in Wales yet born in England I never know who to support but tend to come down on the side of Wales because as you say they are the most handsome:rotfl:
I know I'm going to lose friends if they find out.........no sleep again for me tonight :( I seem to be very up and down the last couple of days, is that normal??? Or am I just being a complete idiot :undecided

Up and down is very normal but things will settle down. In a few months when all the problems are sorted, payments underway, creditors settled, you will wonder why on earth you worried so much.

As to friends - I have told a few of my friends of mine but OH would die with shame if certain other friends knew. I don't think they would disown us but he is very embarrassed that we have got to this situation. A lot of our friends have been very money savvy, we haven't. We don't live in numpty mansions for nothing!! Oh and it's not a mansion but I do like to have delusions of grandeur;)

I went to see a motivational speaker last week and he said there are two types of people in the world, dead weights and balloons. Dead weights put you down and discourage you, balloons are the opposite and let you fly. He said ditch the dead weights, get them out of your life. For every one put down from a dead weight you need 17 affirmations from other people just to stay on an even keel.

If you lose friends from being on a DMP then in my book they aren't true friends, so tell them to paddle their boat up the swannee and never come back.:D

Ha ha, that's fabulous! I'll make sure I remember that one if the time comes! And I didn't know about needing 17 affirmations to even out one negative from someone, that's definitely something to think about.

    Flutterby,
Sorry the call with SC wasn't of any help to you. Did you ever try the debt remedy tool on the SC website? I set up my dmp from that, I didn't speak to anyone at SC until my first numpty question as letters started arriving.. sounds like you have a plan to self manage now, so good luck with that. I know others do it and I may change further down the line, I'll see how it all goes!!

After all the dithering I've been to the co-op bank in my lunch break (as per the original plan) got specific details of what ID to use and an appointment tomorrow. Account will be set up by the end of the week.

I'm climbing the walls with pain but I think that's a lot to do with stress. Every little thing I do towards this is helping and once again I'm mentally exhausted. Looking forward to climbing into bed tonight, one day closer to this all being sorted.

Thank you again for the advice and support.

    Hello Kate,

I am glad to hear that your account will be set up by the end of the week! Your making progress! :)

I am sorry to hear that you are in so much pain, I can relate to this when I was setting up my DMP. Please take good care of yourself ok?

Yes, the very idea of a DMP came from using that tool, which is why I was so shocked when the guy I spoke to wouldn't even discuss it with me! He told me that the reference number from the website was irrelevant now as I've spoken to him and he is now my debt advisor so must go through him :undecided Thank you, I will see how that goes first as I'm normally useless with this type of stuff.
