Definitley trying Puzzcat! I think I thought the dmp was my magic wand that would make it go away and I have realised (finally!) that I still need to do more to get rid of it. Its definitley been another LBM but for a different reason (if that makes sense?) its made me realise I dont need to be scared of dealing with this head on.

Couldnt have realised this or begun to tackle it properly without the help of you lovely people.
  • Hello all :)
I hope you don't think I'm intruding! I first posted on this thread in January 2009 when I was in despair regarding our debts and money situation - I could see no way out :( I couldn't sleep, I kept crying, my head was all fuzzy with worry, I was embarrassed ..... The list could go on. I came across Mr Lewis's website and in particular this thread and I have to say it has changed my life! The support that I received from the people on here was invaluable, I was convinced that no one could possibly owe the amount we owed, but do you know what , there was, of course, but it didn't matter who owed what we were all here for the same reason. I started my DMP with CCCS in April 2009 and I've never looked back ;). Our debt free date is still WWAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY off in the future but I don't care. The other option for us was bankruptcy, at least doing it this way we are actually paying back what we owe. I just wanted to pop on and reassure all you newbies that have either just started on their DMP journey, or are thinking about starting..... Do it! It will change your life. The first few months can be a bit bumpy and the thought of not paying your creditors is frightening - especially if like us you had never missed a payment - but you'll soon get over that. Money doesn't rule my life anymore, it doesn't keep me awake at night. The debt is still there, but the majority of it is now interest free and ticking along nicely.
Good luck guys and stay strong, you're not alone.

Inspiring post MD, thank you so much for sharing :T

Your phrase "Money doesn't rule my life anymore, it doesn't keep me awake at night" sums up perfectly the key elements of what a LBM and starting your journey to becoming debt free is about. Yes it is a bumpy ride at first, the first few weeks or even months can be a real rollercoaster but it passes and life is different.

"You're not alone" is what this thread is all about, knowing that there are other people in exactly the same situation as you who will offer their experience, help and advise and above all support you is truly invaluable. :)

Thanks Sazzie - I am determined to sort this asap. It wont happen over night but hopefully will be able to bring forward my anticipated debt free date of 2019!

Yesterday I joined the baking thread and made a cake from scratch for the first time it was lovely and theres a little slice left over for a cup of tea later today ;). Tonight we are taking the kids out to "trick or treat" for halloween. we only go to the houses we know so that will keep our sweeties stocked up cutting the chance of unnecessary spending!

I have planned my november budgets, got my envelopes all labelled up and started withdrawing the cash to fill them with the understanding that we dont use our debit card at all and only use the money in the envelopes to keep track of where our money is going.

Heres to another good day - should be a NSD too!
  • hello everyone.
i have made several half hearted attempts to address my debts over the last couple of years but have hit rock bottom now. i haven't made payments for a couple of months now. i have approx 25k of debt. mostly credit cards, and 2 awful pay day loans.
well its all come to a head now and i am starting a dmp with step change. i am absoultely bricking it as the dmp payment is only 115 per month....not even the min payment on 1 of my cc! i reckon some of the smaller debts will barely get more than a pound.
petrified they won't accept. the pdl have already threatened door step collection and some companies have sent really horrid letters.
i hope i am doing the right thing... i have the added complication of working in a financially regulated industry and have a professional work loan which i cannot include in the dmp as i would lose my job.
    god i feel sick.....

I know it doesn't seem like it now but it will get better!! We are about to make our third payment to payplan and nearly all have accepted out plan. We have 51k to pay  our payments are a lot higher but equally our debt is double. The relief that a dmp brings is amazing. And you forget how good it is to pay with cash and not juggle credit cards. Stick with it and I promise you will feel a lot better!! Creditors will send a lot of computer generated letters but you need to think that at least you are confronting the debts and being realistic! We have been trying to get extra money by putting things on eBay or amazon and doing loads of overtime so we can get rid of this debt.

Sorry for lengthy post but I know exactly how you feel because this was pretty much me three months ago.

    Keep your chin up

  • Hey debt3by 30
Well done you ! You are so doing the right thing. Dani has given you a great reply, and as they said they know exactly how you feel as that was them 3 months ago, same for me, had exactly the same fears and feelings 4 1/2 years ago - we all go through the same rollercoaster of emotions on here, we wouldn't be human if we didn't.
When I was at the beginning of my DMP journey I used to be envious of the 'old timers' like I am now, as they always spoke so positively and were so adamant that things would be fine, and kept telling me 'in a few months I would be feeling like the weight of the world had been lifted '... At the time I couldn't see past the next day let alone the next few months, but guess what, they were right and trust me you will be fine, the light at the tunnel may seem a long way off, but hey, trust me, you'll get there.
Stay strong, you can do this
