  • Hi allypops, wishing you good luck with the car issue, this is our concern too, that we wont have enough time to build up an emergency fund before an emergency arrives!

The other thing I have learnt is a lot of what we worry about never actually comes to fruition and when it does is often not as bad as we feared. My fridge freezer has been on it's last legs for 4 years. I now have money set aside to buy a new one but the fridge freezer and I are having a battle of wills who will give in first. :rotfl:

Make sure you have lots of positive tunes pumping out that radio, do try not to laugh or cry too much if Simply Red's money's too tight to mention turns out to be the next song.

Things will happen during the DMP and the budget will have to be altered to reflect it, seemples.

    Morning all,

Allypops good luck with the car, ours is pretty old and has done lots of miles. We are trying to build up an emergency fund but its not easy.

Had my first call from Barclays Partner Finance this morning. She asked for a payment and I refused, explained our situation, gave her our SC reference and asked her not to call again but only to contact us in writing. She was surprisingly nice and said the account would be put on hold for 30 days until they had received our budget from SC.
I feel quite positive actually, I wonder if I should contact SC and ask for an update on who has accepted the DMP or will they let me know?
I just feel a bit frustrated wanting everything to be in place, I just need to be patient. I suppose once the first payment goes to SC it will feel real.

The car is very unwell. It needed a new clutch at the end of last year. Don't know what is wrong with it now but it has been making increasingly horrible noises and then today was also overheating. It's DH's car (I got rid of mine ages ago) and he needs it for work (shift work varying from 3am starts to 2am finishes). Our contingency fund has already run out with previous contingency type expenditure like boiler breakdown (boiler on its way out too) and additional leasehold service charges. I hope the car is fixable but then we still don't have any money to fix it. Oh carp!

Really sorry to hear about the car Ally :(

Our old faithful lasting until we are debt free is probably our biggest worry but if it did die, we would have to replace it, we can't get to work via public transport and we do share a car for a long daily commute.

As others have said, I would probably go the token payment route but do you know that Payplan have an option for their clients on DMPs to buy white goods and cars?

Well done on Barclays, it always feels better when one phone call is out of the way.

We never heard from StepChange (ex CCCS) about who had and hadn't accepted our DMP and they told us not to worry about it .... but of course, I did.

It's hard to be patient at first and the initial couple of months can be very frustrating, I really felt like we were getting nowhere. Then suddenly it all started to fall into place and we could actually see balances reducing and debt going down.

Hold on to that thought Julie, you will be there soon!

Well done on the call. Do you know that it is in the OFT guidelines to give debtors 30 days breathing space? Will find the reference for you. By all means contact SC but from my experience they just want you to pay the money, communications are not their strong point. Plough the impatience into the planning and spreadsheets it helps to pass the time and feel in control. Myself and my twin Ms TTFTM are two of the most impatient ones here; we know this tactic helps!

Thank you HH and TTFTM its so nice to know I'm not alone.

Just had a call from EON, I guess this is what to expect. They can't accept the offer from SC as it would take longer than 12 months to pay the debt so they will pass on to their debt collection department who will negotiate but I did tell them, the offer won't go up until my budget changes!
Also they said it is not clear from SC letter that this offer is monthly, I can't see that being the case can you?
Anyway another one dealt with, I'm calm when I am on the call its only afterwards that I hyperventilate :rotfl:

Here it is on pg 69

    http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/general/oft1107.pdf

The Credit Services Association committed to Government in 2009 that its members would not contact debtors to pursue debts for 30 days, as soon as they have been informed that a debt advisor has taken on the case on behalf of the borrower, with a view to allowing the debt advisor to negotiate with creditors and/or any third party debt recovery businesses so that a plan for repaying the debt can be agreed.
