Welfare Reform

The more I read about the effects of the "Welfare Reform" the worse it gets.
There are a lot of changes still to come and I am really concerned about what the situation will be like in, say a year if things are already bad now for people.
I just don't think the people making the rules and bringing in all these changes care a hoot about the effects on people's lives.
Will people have to starve and die before things change?0 -

Hi
The area I cover we are now starting to see more possession hearings which involve the so called bedroom tax or under occupancy.
It is dreadful as the Financial Statements & proposals being prepared for court are to say the least 'bare'
It would seem that Social Landlords have no option other than to 'apply the rules' with regard to rent arrears & re-possession.
Yes, great stuff, we have to do what we are told! but we are talking about people and families, young families, not just numbers on a sheet!
It is depressing to say the least and in my opinion not even cost effective.
Anyway for those who may or may not lean to my way of thinking, maybe have a read at the Inside Housing article below

Well, why doesn't this surprise me in the least, one rule for them and another for everyone else. If MP's are entitled to a family life then why not everyone else?DMP Mutual Support Thread No. 421

Hi
It is hard to argue with what you say
I am not getting into the politics game but a couple of paragraphs from the article below that say it all for me.
"Conservative MP Nigel Adams, who accused the BBC of having a ‘preconceived agenda’ over its bedroom tax coverage, claimed £6,735 for costs related to dependants. He did not comment"
"Climate change minister Greg Barker claimed an extra £3,313 for costs related to his dependants. His office said the claims were ‘fully compliant with IPSA rules"
You could not make it up really....could you?
This is a dreadful serious subject for those caught up in the benefits trap and winter is fast approaching.
Scapegoating people is the easiest thing in the world if you are not affected or out of touch.
Nobody knows for certain what is round the corner.

Hi
According to this Mirror article it does not make much economic sense either.

Aye aye! What is going on here?
The bedroom tax is starting to look very shaky and will get worse as the debts, possessions and eviction threats rise.
Mmmm, is it another case of...nobody would listen to the front line people again?
Its a mess, oh yes, it is a big mess!
Back to school costs & winter fast approaching!
The advice / support agencies & centres are bracing themselves, no doubt about it (those that have to deal with this type of debt that is)
If you are struggling with your rent and other debts, get advice & help ASAP, prioritise your debts & spending, don't let things get out of control possession procedure wise.

No it doesn't make much sense. People I know in social housing pay less rent than they would be entitled to if they paid a private landlord and claimed the local housing allowance. If everyone moved out into the 'correct' size of dwelling it would cost taxpayers more.DMP Mutual Support Thread No. 421

I have to say that the article only implies that it's related to "bedroom tax", in fact it doesn't show any evidence at all really. Typical mirror rubbish.
The problem in this country is no rent controls ( this should be a priority for Labour but as most of them will own buy to let's, they won't), not really a lack of housing as there are plenty of boarded up places.
For Labour to bleat about the torys low wage high tax country is disgraceful, they were fully behind this. The mirror is a rag as much as the daily mail.I'm Debt Free :j 2/09/2013

I'm not much of a fan of the Daily Mirror either. Rent controls may be the way to go - I'm no expert on this! However I feel the bedroom tax is ill thought out because the people it affects have very little choice in where they live. The government are expecting single people to live in a one bedroomed accommodation, but there are simply not enough places of this size for people to move into. Meanwhile on an estate near me 3 bed houses are boarded up unused because people can't afford to move into them. This doesn't make sense.DMP Mutual Support Thread No. 421
