But if it's a 50/50 claim, then surely the other driver can also claim their costs (if any) from the OP's insurers which could then affect their future premiums.0

Nothing you can do to prevent this. (Not claiming your 50% off the third party insurer doesn't prevent the third party claiming his 50% back off your insurer!)
Though you can get your NCD reinstated (if you have any unprotected to lose). You can reimburse your insurer's outlay to the third party and thereby change the claim to non fault and get any lost NCD back.0
