I think you are spot on Nelski, I know my DD uses a lot of ready meals, she is autistic and can't cook, it's not safe, I used a lot when going through a bad depression. That's the tragedy about this, not that people use ready meals but that the people in charge really don't care. At what stage did they decide never to test their products/goods and if they have been testing (surely that should be mandatory), then why haven't we known sooner.

My DD adores horses, she would be bereft if she unknowingly had eaten one. :( Fortunately she doesn't touch "beef" products but does eat hot dogs and tinned meat balls.

and why shouldn't she be able to use ready meals if that is what works best for her. I broke my hip a few months ago and there was no way any real cooking could happen with 2 crutches to deal with and a lot of pain standing. Ready meals were bought a many for that time and i am still here to tell the tale.

What about the elderly who get meals delivered, or the daft women who pay loads to have their diet food in packs on the doorstep :D
Its a far bigger issue than a few cheap lasagnes and I am starting to think that too much knowledge is maybe a dangerous thing

Yes, I agree she should be able to use ready meals, without judgement but I also think she should be able to eat the food without fearing some other ingredient is in there, which could adversely affect her health. I don't believe necessarily there will be immediate issues health wise, but long term who knows. And how is it going to be measured if a person becomes ill, it would be impossible I imagine.

There's allergies and intolerances to consider.
  • I can understand why and for what reason folk use ready meals and good luck to them its just not for me.I live alone and have for nine and a half years yet I still cook for myself from scratch as its the way I have always cooked.when I get too old to cook hopefully one of my Dds will make soem frozen stuff for me as ,especially the youngest one is a smashing cook. But fingers crossed that is a long way off yet :):)

I don't eat meat and don't buy any readymeals but this is very worrying in general about our food. The more you hear and look into it the more suspect is all seems. Apart from people either not wanting to eat a product that is in fact another, or personal reasons for only wanting to eat certain types of meat, the animal welfare and drug problems do seem such an unknown. Spanghero one of the suppliers in the chain appear to have been forced to withdraw mince because of an E.Coli scare in 2011. Who knows what kind of practices are happening in other countries ...? Tip of the iceberg as is being widely suggested.

I hope the government and other agencies who are supposed to be protecting consumers get back to proper and full inspection regime and quality controls which seem to have been gradually eroded by deregulation over the past years.

I don't eat ready meals and try and avoid anything that I don't know what is inside, but it is hard on a tight budget.

I aim to go vegetarian when my final cat goes on her way (hopefully not for a long time, though she is 18) as it will be easier to avoid meats, although with all of my ailments, chicken is a very useful thing to eat, so don't know how I will cope, although I will be here asking for advice when it happens!

I read the article on the delivery driver who says Morrisons and Waitrose check alot more than other supermarkets - do we think this is for real, or maybe he's in some way 'on commision' from those to say those things?

I grew up without ready meals, we did have a Findus crispy pancake as a treat once, the chicken filling and neither sister or I liked it so Mum never bothered again.
Even as a student I didn't do the day meals. I managed to get a load of us to do spaghetti bologna se , chilli and so on en masse worked quite well.
I was (un) fortunate to be taken round a large food processing plant and decided on the basis of this I was NEVER eating something I could not identify as th bit of the animal .....however I have succumbed via DH to Mr T finest chicken and leek filo thingy .... Was a bit dubious but hey I get the time pressures
I think we all need to be aware of what is in our food and the production, we have become detatched from this process and it does us no favours

  • whether it's ready meals, SM fresh or frozen meat, or locally farmed meat from a high street butcher, surely it's a basic right that the description on the label/sign is true??
