Well, I have to say that I am not going to touch supermarket meat with a disinfected barge pole, no matter how cheap. I'll eat more vegetarian options (made myself) and buy the odd piece of meat that I've chosen to eat from the butcher, not one that's been forced on me with all the possible horrendous chemicals and disease in it, and there's no way I would feed it to my children.

This really is the tip of the iceberg.

i agree deffo tip of the iceberg, goodness only knows what revelations will come to light as more food companies getting checked out daily..........wont do me a bit of harm laying off the meat a bit i over weight and have been introducing soooo much more veggie dishes into our diet so more fish will be in our food from now on xxx

  • If they find horse meat in school meals I reckon there will be even more of an outcry and they probably will ban the processed cr*p coming in..unless they sit on the story for a few months or so that is...

  • The problem with the this current food scare, is that the meat in the affected processed foods, burgers, lasagnes etc..... is untraceable:eek:.

Beef bred for the UK beef food industry is carefully monitored and accounted for each step of the way, from calf at the farm, to abbatoir.

The horsemeat finding its way into our food is being introduced under the radar, and with a 'no questions asked' kind of transaction. :naughty: There is no way of tracing where these horses came from, how they were reared and what medication/supplements they may have been taking. As others have said, horses often are given medication unsuitable for humans, but if the drugs remain present in the meat from the animal, the drugs will enter our foodchain, without any regulation at all.

That is why this current food fiasco should be treated with the gravity it deserves.....and heads should roll at the top of the guilty companies, for putting the population at large's health, and wellbeing aside, in favour of making a 'fast buck'.

some extremely good points on this thread particularly re chemicals and drugs. I must say I feel very fortunate not to have bought ready meals for many years. I think the can of worms is going to be overwhelming, all the meat on pizzas, in pasties, in pies etc

I am going to make even more effort now and will prepare my own frozen ready meals, it isn`t hard if using foil containers because there could be a situation when I may need to buy something quick, you never know. I`ll have a few meals always ready and just rotate them

I am worrying for children and school meals and people in care homes or getting meals on wheels and those in hospital. This food thing is absolutely massive and I think the government are trying to keep a lid on it. It is going to blow sky high and is no longer anything to do with eating horse but it is about deception and potentially using poisoned food
  • I have not eaten meat in any form for many years - not because I did not like it but because of concerns surrounding animal welfare. I do not understand why other people just do not seem to care.:(

"Comigel claims it sourced its meat from Romania, which has been subjected to export restrictions due to the prevalence of the viral disease equine infectious anaemia in the country."
This detail appears to be the most alarming new factor in this unfolding crisis. If the rendered horse carcasses coming out of Romania are actually diseased and the animals have been treated with drugs for that disease prior to slaughter, we can see why criminal gangs would be able to make an instant profit by selling them as 'beef'. As diseased horse carcasses in Romania they would be worthless, but as 'beef' in the West they suddenly acquire considerable value in the meat processing industry.
Is the rendered horse meat that's been found so far in supermarket products the remains of the diseased horses officially banned from export from Romania? If so, Owen Paterson's assertions about food safety are not only misleading, they are wilfully negligent and putting the public at needless further risk.

From reading this I would say the aldi/findus ready meals do pose a risk as diseased and drug ridden.

we dont know how its liked to irish burgers and involves a few countries now.
There is no cure for Equine Infectious Anaemia, and no treatment - the horse should be put to sleep immediately. It is a notifiable disease in Europe, and the USA, and is spread by midges or flies....
  • Did anyone hear a guy from a Morrisons abattoir on the radio yesterday?

Only caught half of it and wondered if anyone could expand on that.

I think he said that Morrisons was the only supermarket with it's own abattoir.
