What do you guys have that doesn't mean spending hours in the kitchen on a sat afternoon prepping but gives you that 'treat' without breaking the budget. (BTW I already have the takeaway secret book and am working my way through it!) ...

I'm going to assume that you cook all the other days of the week: so, why not cook your Saturday supper on one of your week day cooking days?

So, as an example: if you cook a bolognaise sauce during the week - double it! - come Saturday, that bolognaise sauce becomes ....

    lasagne
chilli (just as some dried chillis)
    calzones
    etc

If you cook sausages during the week - double it! - come Saturday, those (cooked) sausages could be used to make:

    toad in the hole
    chickpea and sausage goulash
    sausage pizza
    sausage pasta

By using this method, the Saturday "treat" could then be turned to a delicious dessert (which will cost no where near as much as a take away) and will save you hours in the kitchen ;)

We go walking every saturday and the last thing I want to do after that is cook.

I just double up when ever I make chilli, lasagne, curry etc so we always got something in the freezer that can be heated up. Then all I have to do is cook rice or pasta or if feeling really lazy nuke some naan bread.

Saturday is usually our 'steak' night. We've had chicken tonight cause hubby had dental surgery yesterday and didnt want to chance undoing the good work the dentist did. Our son always opts out of a cooked meal and has a 12" pizza all to himself.

Spaghetti bolognese or chilli if buying mince or chicken and leek pie with chips and peas from Jamies 30 minute meals which gives ideas for quick meals.
  • We always cook from scratch and eat full dinners so our Saturday teas tend to be lazy...

    Hot dogs, onions & rolls
    H/M Cheeseburgers
    Faitas (chicken or just veg)
    Frozen pizzas (the shame!! lol)
    Quesidillas

Tonight we just had Cheese toasties!

Our usual Sat tea is arabiatta - quick, easy and nice and spicy. We have that with a big salad and a bottle of wine. Yum yum. Trays on our knees so v relaxed :)

Curry! Always curry on Saturday night round here. You could have made it in advance and just pull it out the freezer, or we use jar sauce so that's easier than cooking completely from scratch (I'm going to be kicked off this board for that!)

TBH the main thing that makes it easier for me is that OH cooks on Saturdays, so after doing all the other cooking in the week I get the night off.

Saturday night is pasta night in this house...meatballs in tomato sauce, spaghetti, salad & garlic bread. I make the meatballs in sauce every third or fourth week and freeze in x4 person portions, so it's quick and easy most weeks. For pud we usually have HM chocolate cream cake. It's the most unhealthy meal I make in the week so we all enjoy it!

We, 3 adults just had sausages cooked on the George and chips. 2 people had bread to make sausage sandwiches. 1 person grilled tomato's.
Cost sausages 12 for £2 Iceland and about a 1/3 bag of chips. Whole bag cost £1.
So total dinner for 3 = less than £3.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)
