Please pardon my extreme naivity here, but to transfer my direct debits from Lloyds to Santander do I just contact each company and ask them to do the change, and then cancel them on the Lloyds site?

Yes, contact each company and ask them to change. I find they tend to cancel the old ones themselves, but it's definitely worth checking yourself.

Just for anyone else reading, that was an offer running for applications until 31/12/2012 but (currently) isn't listed on the website.
The 'extended' offer is detailed here...

No Annual Fee for the first year. If you already have, or open a new, 123 Current Account, we'll refund the first year's annual fee on your 123 Credit Card. Offer valid until 30/06/2013.

I'm actually tempted to do the automatic transfer with Santander since it's only some charity DDs I want to leave behind with Lloyds, but I need to keep at least 2 for the Vantage 4% offer

I haven't actually used the Santander switcher service but I have used that of 2 other banks in the past.

I found that I could have done the whole thing myself a lot quicker - - you still need to keep an eye on things actually being done, and you need to make sure you have your money in the right place at the right time.

When I came to transfer my DDs to Santander, it was almost al done within 1 hour. Some you can do online, some you call, some you have to send a downloaded form to. The rest was then just to check that the changed DDs popped up at Santander and dropped off at my previous account - - a matter of minutes.

The one I couldn't do immediately was Virgin Media, who wouldn't let me change the instruction until after the next bill had been paid.

Best time to transfer is immediately after a DD has been taken, because that leaves the payee with plenty of time to update their systems. And you have plenty of time to see the changeover on your accounts.

Didn't realise the superscript '2' (footnote reference) hadn't pasted properly. Post edited. :o
