Saying I owe him money - fake letter?

I broke up with my ex Dec 2007. Recently I received a hand delivered letter stating that he is claiming that he lent me almost £3500 in 2006 and that I have never paid him back. The letter is apparently written by a professional who doesn't actually state what her role or job title is. She hand delivered it to my house at approx 19:30. The company she apparently runs doesn't exist. She states that she has been instructed to issue court proceedings if I don't contact her client to pay within 7 days. She is not a registered solicitor.

I definately haven't borrowed any money off him. He was unemployed and on benefits for the majority of our 2 year relationship whilst I was working full time as a nurse. I payed for all of our food and bills whilst living together. I tutored him through college. Then applied for jobs for him and prepped him for interviews. I ended the relationship and he took it badly. He began to stalk and threaten me for a while after. This is all just his latest scam

Should I just ignore the letter or should I get a solicitor to write a reply to him telling him to basically get lost?
Obviously he has no evidence of a loan because it never happened but could I still find myself in court?

Thanks for any advice

  • He sounds like a right loser and barnpot!

If he continues to write to you, do him for harassment.

He sounds like my ex, whereby he gave me a computer as a gift and then claimed it back when he got in a mood. When I left him and took the computer, he contacted a solicitor. The solicitor wrote to me and told me to hand it back. I told the solicitor that it was a gift and my ex is not even computer literate. I never heard for the solicitor or my ex again.

The letter is probably from him rather than some made up woman - still stalking you.

Keep it for evidence in case you need to report him to the police for harassment.

    Otherwise, ignore.

Read all this again - can you see any reason why you should bother to reply to it?

Just ignore it! And all other communication, until you get something from a court that you must reply to.

  • Up to him to prove it too and why has he waited 7 years to action?

It is now 2013. The debt (even if it did exist) is now statute barred.
  • As Antrobus states above, the debt is statute barred and he cannot take you to court for the debt, if it ever existed.

A short letter to the return address stating this fact should be enough to stop any further nonsense.

I would go to the police - stalking can turn really nasty.

Ignore the letter, and mention it to the officials now (If you haven't already)...

  • 7 years?? statute barred surely????

and just read the same comments above!!!!!

but if you receive any further communication, go straight to the police. the letter from this person who is hand delivering it, isnt this false representation???

    Poppasmurf,

I really don't think it's a good idea for the OP to send a letter to that effect. Opening an unnecessary dialogue will be of no benefit to the OP. Remember that statute barring only means the debt cannot be pursued through court, it doesn't mean the debt doesn't exist.

Nothing will frustrate the efforts of the OP's ex more than simply not engaging in dialogue. The only recourse the ex would then have is to issue court proceedings. They can be defended better if the OP has kept her powder dry until she sees what evidence, if any, her ex is providing to substantiate his claim.

If she was being harassed by phone calls then it would be a different matter, but letters? Just collect the confetti.
